I visited the 'Thomson Celebration' (ex HAL Noordam) on Sunday at Harwich.

Has anybody any pictures of her original interiors?

Malcolm,

I visited Noordam on 6 June 2002 and 8 June 2003.
Photos to be accessed via my website, unfortunately, for these albums you still have to register with Kodakgallery. Should not be a problem to you

I just offered them to Clive.

Hi David, I took very few pictures, by Clive Harvey and David Trevor Jones took loads.

Sorry that you did not get a place, but it's the luck of the draw on such occasions when the visit is oversubscribed. The OLS chairman did not get a place either!

I don't see "Observation Bar" on the deck plan in my 85/86 brochure. Where was it?

Thanks Mec1. What are Thomson's passengers like?

What cabin grade/number did you have, if you can recall.

What's the food and entertainment like compared to the American mass market ships?

I have worked with Thomson for a short time and may answer some things.

The food on Thomson Cruises are from buffets to A La Carte menus so there is a varied choice onboard.
There are British options or Local specialities so there are varied options of food.

Some are fresh Italian Linguini, lightly tossed in garlic and olive oil or tender roast beef with fluffy yorkshire puddings with rich gravy. Nice deserts to follow that.

There are some nice evening nights out where dressing up is required.

There is also the A La Carte menu which includes 5 courses with waiter service but a buffet is 24hr too.

Cruises can be enjoyable for families or anyone on cruises Thomson Spirit, Destiny or Celebration but Thomson Emerald is just for couples and is best for older clients, also Calypso is available this year for adults only around the greek islands.

Next years brochures for Thomson Cruises are out now!

Steve

Thanks Stevie.

I notice that although a 'budget line' Thomson slip in a number of additional charges. For example in-flight meals are £12 per head, if a couple want to sit together that's another £12 per head, cabin-room service has a fee.

When one works out the total cost, they are really not so much cheaper than the non-budget lines,

In the HAL days the observation lounge was called Crow's Nest. And the bar in the midt of the lounges was build around a mast and resembled a crows nest as a/b the old tall ships. Today a/b HAL vessels the observation lounges are called Crow's Nest.

Greetings Ben.

On Celebration (and Spirit) it is call "Horizons". I bet the decore has not changed. It still has the mast in the center.

We were on the Spirit in January '04. Yes, the flights (Britannia Airways, also a TUI operation) were ultra-budget. Besides charging for meals and seat assignments, there were no free beverages, not even water. We had non-reclining seats without headrests; it was a very strange feeling to be able to see everyone from the shoulders up. The flight attendants spent the entire flight in the aisle selling one thing after another.

The ship was another thing altogether. Still beautiful, not changed all that much from her HAL days (I was also on her in '84). Good food, comfortable cabins and public rooms. The main dining room and Lido Cafe are still among my favorite eating areas on any ship I've been on.

I have a few interior shots of the Noordam from '85, but unfortunately not the Crow's Nest.

There are the additional charges if you need them but they can be taken off to suit customers needs. There could also be Thomson discounts flying about which change daily that could in theory brush extra charges off.

Are formal evenings very formal? Any Tux?

Are all evening meals open sitting?

Mec1 did you not return from a Thomson cruise dissastisfied with the ports?

Actually I didn't do many really partly necause I had done the Pyramids and Petra before - so I just did the full day Luxor one. However if you're going for the first time you HAVE to do Petra - it is one of the greatest travel things in the world. I' also recommend the Luxor?Valley of the kings tour - it is really great value (unlike most tours) and an unforgettable day.

[QUOTE]Hi Malcolm, I was on the inaugural cruise in May 2005 when it was abandoned. I re-booked for May 2006. it was my 12th cruise and perhaps the best I have been on for food and entertainment. The service was superb and I am going on it again in 5 weeks. we only had a 2 bed inside cabin but it was OK and cosy.
I wanted to book 2 cruises next year but the thomson itineries from England are poor, and Celebration is sailing from Palma. No use to people who think that flying spoils a good cruise. so I guess Thompsons have lost our bookings and it's back to P&O if you want to sail to the Canaries from Southampton.
Regards
Tim
