Dear friends

Recently I found out that Murmansk Shipping Co acquired a cruise ship and renamed as M/S POLARIS.

Please see her historial as follows:-

Grt/ Dwt. 2097/ 556.

Engines. Två 9-cyl, MAN diesel.

Power. 1405 kW.

Knots. 13,0.

Pax. 201.

Crew. 68.

IMO. 6807395.

Entered in service April 1968 by KNI-Service A/S Sukkertoppen/ Mantiitsoq, Greenland- GREENLAND BUREAU TURISM SERVICE/Arctic Umiaq Line.

1999. Laid up Nakskov, Danmark.

2000 04. Sold to Scandinavian Cruise Line, Nassau, Bahamas. Changed name to SHEARWATER.

2000 04. Acquired by Fredericia Skibsværft A/S, Fredericia, Denmark.

2000. Plans to make cruises calling at Leith- Scotland, Shetlands and Hebrideans islands.

2001 05 22. Changed name to BRAND POLARIS.

2003 06 09. Changed name to VIKING POLARIS.

2005 04 18. Sold to Murmansk Shipping, Murmansk, Russia. Changed name to POLARIS.

My question is, does someone know where she will be cruising?

Which type of cruises? Iteneraries, prices?

I would like to hear histories about her past...too...because she is one of those cruise ships that nobody speaks and is certainly one of the last classic ships still afloat.

Kindest regards

D

About MS Disko. In the early 1990's she was taken from the coastel liner service along the western Greenland coast. Without any large rebuilding she became a summer cruiseship which sailed mostly 8 day circuits from/to Kangerlussuaq formerly called Sondre Stromfjord. This is situated in Mid Greenland at the end of the 200 km. long fjord, where is the main Greenland international airport.
At the end of the season when the icefields have gone up north there were even 14 night sailings as far north as Thule.
I sailed a 7 night cruise in the summer of 1998. In magnificent weather we cruised Diskobay full of icebergs and clear blue sky's. By far our most impressive cruise experience ever. This cruiseservice was managed by OVDS/Hurtigruten.
One or two summers later she ran aground in the Greenlandarea. It seems she has been back there with her new names of Shearwater, Brand Polaris.
I have some old german brochures from which this is clear.
At the moment there is sailing in this area ms Disko2 another rebuild coastel vessel.
Next year Hurtigruten will return to the area with the new purpose build ship FRAM from Fincantieri.

Her summer season Greenland Cruises have often been advertised in the papers in the UK, not only through NCV but also "Discover Iceland", I have a few of their brochures somewhere. Other operators have sold the trips too.
