While on the Norwegian Spirit, there is a bar and lounge overlooking the bow of the ship called Galaxy of the Stars. The room is divided with glass divisions and doors for people who want to just view the bow cutting through the ocean, or sit and read around the U shaped glassed in viewing shaped area. The inside area hosts many activities on sea days and is a popular spot at night, so the sounds from the inside also are heard in the viewing area, but that was OK. You cannot see much at night, anyway.

In this area there is a spiral staircase going down to the area where you can overlook the bridge. That was interesting, of course. While we were there, they turned on windshield wipers because we went through a storm briefly. I never thought about windshield wipers on a ship!

For me, even better than the bridge was the small room behind it with the walls covered with plaques and framed congratulatory wishes for the ship on her inaugural visit to many ports. It must be a tradition for island and city governments, the port authorities, and other sea going organizations to send these plaques on a ship's first visit.

When she was the Superstar Leo, this ship visited many Asian ports and it was very interesting to see the smallest island to largest port city send welcome and congratulations to the ship. When sailing from North America to the Caribbean, the same honors were bestowed on her. There was a case with gifts that were sent to the ship. The building history of the ship was also on one wall, which was I found to be of great interest.

All ships must get these plaques. I wonder where the QE2's are, or where the Norways are. Imagine the history in these awards.

Many ships have them 'near the bridge' (e.g. in the corridor to the bridge) - some have them on display for the passengers.

Yes - it is a tradition to award a ship (passenger or otherwise) a plaque commorating the ship's maiden arrival in a port of call. I have no idea where they are on the Norway (as I have never sailed on her) as for the QE2 - while I have sailed a number of times - I cannot recall where they are located to be honest with you. It seems to be pretty common for those whips with top obervation lounges to have them along the entrance to that lounge (i.e. Seabourn Sun) but I don't know if there is any particular traditional area on a ship to display these.

Anyone else know?

The NORWAY's presentation plaques are (or were) located on Norway deck, forward foyer, both to port and starboard sides. This is the foyer leading down into the Windward Dining Room.

Many times when a ship is scrapped, the owners remove her presentation plaques ahead of time. Sometimes, as I believe in the case of ROTTERDAM '59, these plaques are auctioned off to the highest bidders.

QE2's commemorative plaques are located in the small stairway leading from Boat Deck up to the bridge on Signal Deck, past the Captain's quarters.

On both Saga Rose and Saga Ruby the plaques can be found at the top of the forward stairway.

Again I claim that, when I visited QE2 two weeks ago, I saw many official "gifts" presented to the ship by various ports and organizations, such as portraits and plaques, in the stairway leading to the bridge.

I don't know if there are more plaques down in the B stairway. By the way, the Computer Learning Centre is located next to the A stairway on Two Deck.

Great pictures of the displays of commemorative plaques on several ships, Pam! Thanks for posting them. I wonder if I took any pictures of this on the Norwegian Spirit. I will have to check my camera. I think I may have just wandered around peering at the walls and reading the plaques. I will look for this on any ship I sail on, after this.
