I think a quick look at SS FRANCE should provide your answer. Carnival certainly did not invent the wing tipped funnel.

In regards to CARNIVAL FREEDOM .... she is a sister to CARNIVAL LIBERTY and every other Destiny/Conquest Class ship out there, so no, I do not believe her funnel will be any different.

Horrible. France's was stylish. Carnivore's is hideous and makes you want to grab it's ears and yank it off.

I rest my case too, J.J.S. Norway was never that hideous back, front or side and never had a gaping hole in the middle. Vive La France! Down with the imposters! LOL! No amount of 'inspiration' can make those stacks looks as attractive as France/Norway.

I can’t see the fuzz about the iconic Carnival funnel design, I actually like it. It’s that what is beneath the funnel that looks so troubled.

I'm with you Onno. I love the funnel design on FRANCE/NORWAY, and very much like it on Carnival. Carnival has adapted and modernized it and probably made it more functional as well. There are many things I don't like about Carnival, but the funnel and logo are not two of them.

It's ugly like the ships. If they were 'inspired' by France it shows they had an early case of lack of originality which has continued through their takeovers of other lines. From behind they look like a spacehopper. Not that I want to go up and down on one but you know what I mean. LOL!

So, is it the ships or the smokestack that are ugly?

Lets see....

Here I have placed the funnel from Carnival Ecstasy on P&O's Canberra.

J.S.S. that's sacrilege! Ruining a perfectly beautiful with the stack of that thing. But I like you so I'll forgive you. Course people will now say Canberra looks better with it you'll see.

Personally I don't think that is very fair. How about putting FRANCE/NORWAY's funnel on CANBERRA and seeing if it looks any better. I doubt it.

Not every funnel looks good on every ship. The CANBERRA with her far aft funnel placement has more limitations than many ships as to what funnel would look good on her.

The ones on Spirit class look good besides the color, I guess they would look better if the red was turquoise colored instead, much better.

The funnel design was originated for Tropicale by one Joseph Farcus. Personally I think it is stylish, efficient and instantly recognisable though I agree that the ships underneath leave a lot to be desired...

Personally I find the carnival stack to be more reminiscent of an aircraft tail section with a mid mounted engine than the France's funnel.

Just my opinion though

In Philip Dawsons 'British Superliners of the 60s' there are pics of two builders models of Canberra w/two versions of a delta-wing style funnel. At some point in the late 1950s, P&O/Harland & Wolff actually considered these flattened Carnival style funnels for Canberra. In both photos, the vertical mast remained and did not compliment the delta style raked uptakes IMO.

ss Frances funnels always reminded me of a submarines winged conning tower. Who knows, a ship designer may have liked the modern design and incorporated that into the Frances funnels.

They kinda remind me of the elevators, and ridder on a tri-engines jetliner like the DC-10 or MD-11. There alright to me not that ugly, but they could be better, the ones on Carnival Pride, Spirit..etc look a lot better.

My goodness, you Carnival bashers really need to take a step back.

At this point, if Carnival came up with a ship design identical to the France you would find some reason to knock it. Knee-jerk criticisms simply because the subject is associated with Carnival are becoming tiresome.

If you are going to knock it, try putting some substance behind your criticism.

I actually cant bash the funnel design, its a nice design...i do agree its reminiscent of Norways' but the fact that its a great design not only for aesthetics but funcionality. Carnivals' funnels are very tall enabling the exhaust to be expelled high above the decks. The only draw back with that design is that when the wind blows the soot the opposite direction the wing tips become very dirty as on alllll of the Carnival vessels or any vessel that uses the design...For example...the Paul Allen's Expedition styled yacht 'Octopus'. She uses the wing design on her funnel....and the tips get very dirty...just that the crew clean it off quickly
