OK - here is my question...i have yet to do the Panama Canal but after having done the Main-Danube canal over the Franconian Alps and the Upper Danube (as far as Budapest) I am wondering what the fascination is with the Panama Canal - how many locks are there really?

I understand the importance of the canal - but frankly the locks on the European rivers (as well as that of the Dam on the Yangtze) are very incredible achievements as well...

I am not an engineer - so I am just curious as to why this particular set of locks holds a fascination to the average, everyday person.

The fascination is the fact that it connects the east to west and west to east, you can travel n/s at the same time as w/e and s/n at the same time as e/w..

One marvels over the engineering feat at the time it was built.. no computers or modern drilling equipment - pick axes, shovels and wheelbarrows.

The scenery is not that exciting when compared to where you have sailed and the weather can be nasty.. hot, humid, bug ridden..

LOL - and here is the irony - after having posted my question - my father e-mailed me to say that he has just booked an 18 day cruise from New orleans to Vancouver (I am assuming it is next spring as a repo)...

Wonders never cease

The fascination for the Panama canal may be explained as well by the fact you have very large ocean going ships using these locks, far more impressive than any river vessels.
