What do you guy think are the current and 'future' best designs in cruiseships? There have been a few good designs and then there have been a barrage of clones throughout the industry.

Mine are Century, Aurora, Radiance class, all of AIDAs current vessels and out of the ordinary Wind Surf, Royal Clipper and other computer sail assisted ships.

Future designs that i very much like are the SPHINX class (AIDA DIVA), MSC FANTASIA, SOLSTICE.
Look forward to your comments.

Queen Victoria. Vistas look good in Cunard livery.

Aurora is also one of my favorites. The tiered aft decks and stern are very attractive. She is a simple and elegantly designed ship. The Disney twins are also very attractive even w/the busy gold scroll work on the bow. I wish I could add QM2 but I still don't think she is a beautiful ship. She is very impressive but the odd stern and stubby funnel just don't work.

But her stern makes JayLo's look slender.

My favourite designed ships are of course Oriana and Aurora.
The other ones I really like are Radiance class, pre-signature Vistas, and Rotterdam VI and her sisters.
I don't like the Disney ships contrary to most of you. The designs I hate the most are Destiny/Conquest/Concordia and Mistral class ships.

MSC Fantasia class renderings looks nice, with a real bow and nice lines.
QV as well appears to be a good looking ship, but as I said I like Vistas (as long they don't have that Noordam ugly stern).
Seabourn project looks great too.
RCI Genesis class seems to retain the usual elegant lines of RCI ships despite its size. Wait and see.
I'am a bit sceptical about AidaDiva. I don't like the renderings but I wait to see the ship in itself to decide (I fear those ships to be too tall, too wide and not long enough, not even mentionning their kind of weird shape).
Celebrity Solstice/Equinox few renderings I've seen so far , IMHO, show a very tacky design despite their two funnels. Looks like a badly modified mid 90's ship. But in that case as well I'll wait further (good) renderings to judge those ships definitively.
I must mention that I really liked the Aker project for a NCL panamax. I think it looked great. Too bad it will never be built. I however hope it will inspire the design of their newly ordered 150000t ships.

Parts of her are lovely. Her curved bridgefront w/plently of windows facing forward is fantastic as are the tiered aft lido decks. The sleek bow and whaleback are also wonderful French Line inspired touches but the overall package falls short IMO. We love to cruise on her though and will return for our 3rd trip next year. She is still a very impressive ship that looks best when photographed broadside.

So what is a good design?

Do we talk about 'what is a nice (practical) ship to travel with' or what is a nice ship to look at?

I may just arbitrarily limit myselft it to more recently built ships (otherwise we talk about the Normandie only ) and to exterior appearance (mind you - some 'ugly' ships are very nice aboard):

I liked the Crystal Harmony (also when being aboard ) - she has a very consistent appearance - though her hull is from some angles maybe a bit too massive and her funnel too far at the aft.

A very nice looking, also very consistent ships is the Crown Odyssey. (altough she has some weak links)

Some of the Celebrity ships would come to my mind - Horizon and Zenith are again very nice from the exterior - the fantastic oberservation lounge of the Galaxy makes her a bit less attractive.
The Millenium class looked very interesting in the original incarnation - sadly this has been changed. (livery)

Sun Class of Princess (not from the aft) and the earlier of the new Hirtugruten vessels would also come to my mind - and last, but not least the Sovereign of the Seas class.

Concerning QM2: QM2 is certainly a lovely ship - and I am really looking forward to travel with her. (whenever ) But her exterior appearance is actually far from being attractive to me.

She is not 'ugly' to me (oh no!) - but she has strange proportions. Not only the often discussed stubby funnel - also her bow is (understandably) quite high and as much as I love a terraced stern - in her case, it does not look too well balanced from the outisde (it seems to be very, very, very nice when aboard)

Also she is a bit like a hodgepode to me. (and the eclecticistic approach of taking 'the best' design features of many 'classics' is actually intentional)
I understand the hype surrounding this vessel - and from what I have seen she must be really nice when aboard - but her exterior appearance is not so outstanding to me as it is too many others.

Good topic!!! Genesis has the most elegant design I've seen in a ship, I can imagine how it will look. MSC Fantasia has too much and DeJorio copied the old out of line Viking Crown style which should be reserved for RCCL. QV is much of the same, just another Vista class ship. New is what I like, innovation. I know some people have been waiting for QV so please dont eat me. I'll see if I can scan a design i'm working on, it is a very rough sketch I called Caribbean Around the World.

She is already sailing in the form of her near twin Arcadia. Paint the P&O ship in Cunard livery and you will have the basic exterior design of QV(2). The alterations made to QV(1)s funnel w/the removal of the side windscoops, the extension of the Cunard style side shields upward and the installation of those odd out of scale silver exhaust pipes. QV(2)s funnel will be exactly like it was as seen in early pics of the funnel before the P&O alterations. The QE2 inspired mast was not changed and the same unit will be installed on QV(2).

...somehow they could actually name her Queen Victoria 2 - QV2 - would be consistent with the rest of the fleet.

Crystal Serentiy should get a look in, the best of Harmony but very elegant treatment of the lifeboat arrangments giving a stunning promenade.

Well not all ( I never really liked the Cunard Ambasistor that much). But the rest are great!
I will admit the QM2s stern isn't the best but its better then most today.

Well, her promenade deck is indeed utmost interesting - and she seems to be a very, very nice ship. But her exterior is not as balanced as the Crystal Harmony (which is not perfect) - her proportions are a bit strange - she is too high.

She looks weak and if she was made out of cardboard.

I've been looking forward to see how Carnival Splendor looks like, we have not seen a new Carnival design in years, Conquest-class for me is still Destiny-class. I am also looking forward to seeing the new NCL 150k ton ship.

Of the ships sailing today my favorite designs are Freedom-class, Radiance-class, QM2 (although I would have changed some things), Caribbean Princess and the Millenium-class (in white and blue).

Ships that will sail in the future, Genesis of course, the most impressive design i've seen, I hope they keep it just the way it is. By the way, I found out it will have Bungee-jumping trampolines located behind what should be the sports court, just like the ones found on Enchantment of the Seas.

You'll be disapointed, Carlos. Still a Destiny (Conquest/Concordia to me more precise).
