I see from the deck plans that they are changing a few things, a new boutique in the main foyer, Cova Cafe in the old upper hall, martinis in the old grand bar, The Grand Restaurant beocmes Discoveries, and the library become Michaels Bar, the observation lounge is renamed Looking Glass and there appears to be changes to the spa.

So in all they are making an effort to make the ship a proper Celebrity vessel and I am sure as time goes on staterooms etc will also get a more contempory feel and the ships will loose a little of their Edewardian decor.

In all I think these will be excellent ships for Celebrity. I especially like the idea of a view from Michaels bar - one of my favourites on the Millie class as it does actually have a window albeit not big whereas on the Cuntury class it is an inside space.

What are they thinking? Turning that beautiful library into a bar? Turning the starboard side of reception into a boutique? They'll ruin these ships yet!

I'm not so sure about the ship's being ruined. Different strokes for different folks. I doubt I would ever use the library as it exists now. I'm just not a person that enjoys sitting in a quiet library on vacation. I would however love it as a piano bar such as Michael's Club.

I also find the decor of Celebrity ships very much to my taste. Much more so than the somewhat overdone Edwardian decor or the current R-Class ships. I have a feeling I will prefer the changes (both in design and decor) that Celebrity is making to the ships.

Celebrity has put together a very nice powerpoint presentation of the new JOURNEY and QUEST and I like what I see. There is also a nice image on the first page showing the ship in Celebrity livery. I think it looks good. I wish I had a way of copying the image but I don't think I can.

I have no doubt these ships will be very popular in the Celebrity fleet. I just hope they make upgrades to the pool area like Oceania did. Certainly Celebrity is spending a lot more than Princess did, which basically did nothing except add Princess mailboxes outside each cabin and make over the observation lounge.

It's quite interesting how three rather different cruise lines are using the exact same hardware in their fleets. It has to make you wonder about brand differentiation and how different cruise lines really are.

I must admit that I have not paid much attention to Celebrity’s new smaller ships. However, it’s an interesting idea that a cruise line whose tonnage is progressively getting bigger (Solstice and Equinox) should by a fleet of small ships. This is acknowledgement that big is not always best for everyone.

Will we see other major players also add small ships? Imagine P&O and Cunard, for example. I certainly think the likes of Olsen and Saga have captured many of P&O’s passengers who enjoyed the intimacy of Victoria.

The libraries on these ships are lovely. More of a sanctuary.. and the very last room one should touch I feel. I would have thought as they stood they would be very appealiing to Celeb's passengers. However a library is not revenue generating.. sobeit.

Although I like to see a nice Library onboard a ship, Libraries are a left over from as bygone era. They represent a time when reading was a major form of entertainment and writing letters was the major from of communication.

I don’t suppose the masses spend much time Libraries shore-side, so they are unlikely to need one onboard a ship either. Hence those ships that still have Libraries tend to have rather small ones. As Pam said lending books does not generate income.

The Queens are an exception. I think the QM2 has the biggest Library at sea? Both the QE2 and QM2 also have excellent bookshops too, which of course does generate income.

Of course the term Library now encompassed ‘multi-media’ and most ship have an Internet room which is sometimes part of the Library area.

The entire ship appears to be a sanctuary, and frankly the library looks very much like most other rooms on the ship. They all have the same type of decor. I'm sure there are plenty of other areas where solitude can be found. As Malcolm stated, I don't think large libraries are all that necessary in this day and age (except for a very small segment of the population). I'm actually surprised the Voyager Class ships of Royal Caribbean have such large libraries (two levels).

To be honest I never understood the placement of the library on the R-Class ships. Never made sense to me.

Ernie,
Regarding the rendering of the Journey / Quest, do the ships keep their blue hulls like the Expedition, or switch to a striped motif similar to the Century / Millennium's of the fleet? They have the blue hulls on the website, but that is not much of an image ot go by...

I am also interested in seeing the powerpoint!

Also, I noticed that the passenger capacity will be higher. Celebrity states the JOURNEY and QUEST will carry 710 passengers.

Libraries may or may not be a thing of the past. I my most recent Noordam cruise a large space was dedicated to their Library - powered by the NY TIMES. However they did find a way to make money in the library they placed the internet computers there as well as a coffee bar. However as nice as the library was Celebrity's decor is much different then the former"R" ships were

Great presentation, I very much like the new look cabins and am sure the overall decor etc will look better than the current, the new Michaels Club will I think be a huge improvement. The only thing I am not keen on is the external paint job, too much X and too much blue, would look much better with the white stripes on the blue and much more distinctive, hopefully they will change this. I do hope the revamp the pool. With the crew to pax ratio these ships should deliver a really good cruise product.

It is clear they are going to name the new ships "Celebrity...." including the name on the hull, I hope they will rename all the ships the same way albeit I think their names are so distinctive anyway that the branding of them isn't really nessersary.

Itineraries look fab, will have to organise and try one of these asap.

Mike - although the stateroom photo is actually a suite on the Century, I imagine they will do a very good job in refurbishing those areas.

As for the pool deck, unless something changed very recently, they won't be refurbishing the pool deck with teak.

I enjoyed the presentation, despite the 'errors' pointed out, 99.9% of passengers would not even notice that.

I am not sure about 'popcorn' & 'candy' re the movie package; somewhat lowers the 'upscale' <their word> impression they are stating.

Why is the word 'Carnaval' stated in the itineraries <for Rio>? It really comes over as a very poor spelling error, rather than the Portuguese word. I expect all passengers will just think they have made an error?

We are booked on the Quest for next February and have cruised the "R" type ships of Oceania, and like the small ship package. What caught my eye on the Quest was the itinerary. Don't find this to often in a 14 day Caribbean cruise.
What I hope does not happen are some of the changes I'm reading here on Cruise Talk. Cosmetic changes would be fine. A new look is always good. BUT, eliminating the libarary would be a bad mistake. Making it into a bar, would be even worse. Several people said that libraries are kind of outdated. Maybe on a larger ship with a ton of "things" to do, but again the library was a great place to find solitude, and wait for dinner reservations in the speciality restaurant's. The spa is great for the size of the ship. We used the spa pool everyday on our last Oceania cruise. "Revamping" the main pool would be difficult. Again not that much space to play with.
I'm not sure how many of you have been on a ship this size (680-700), but everything seem's to work great the way it is. Your not going to get the entertainment like a larger ship either just because there's not enough space.
WELL, these are IMHO views. We'll see what Celebrity comes up with. If they want to keep that small ship feel, then not many changes should occur. If they want a big ship out of a little ship, then it will take away from an already "just right" feel.................baffles
Am looking forward to the Soltice class ships........

Those R ships look good in Celebrity colors. It was also interesting to see how Celebrity positioned the different lines on their scale from "comtemporary" to "luxury". I was surprised at where some lines were placed.

I don't like to post links to competitive websites, but here is a preview of CELEBRITY JOURNEY. The ship is currently in dry-dock (Bahamas) getting an extreme-makeover Celebrity style. This makeover is no quick paint-over like Princess has done with their R-Class acquisitions. It's a comprehensive refurbishment from top to bottom more in line with what Oceania has done. I'm quite impressed. I may end up preferring Celebrity's over Oceania's but that remains to be seen.

For those concerned that the library was being turned into the bar, that is not the case ... exactly. Everything will remain the same except a piano will be added. At night you can listen to music and have a cocktail (brought to you from an adjacent bar). During the day the library will be business as usual. I think it makes a nice use of the space. Also, no smoking will be allowed.

Interesting, in her critque about Pullmantur she seems to have "forgotten" all about Delphin Renaissance, when she became Blue Moon &
Blue Dream/Nautica; Pullmantur was unknown I expect until the tales of the workers aboard.
Those awful bedspreads always come up in comment, they still seem to be in all the R ships in the standard cabins.

Will there be a like report of Zenith's refit, she is rather tired out too it seems.

It says 'cigar' smoking is not permitted, not 'no smoking'.

Big difference in age between the two ships. I would imagine ZENITH would be tired out. CELEBRITY JOURNEY is not that old of a ship to begin with and I'm surprised how much wear has been detected.

I doubt you will see a report on ZENITH's refit. Most readers of Cruise Critic are North American's and they have little interest in Pullmantur or even know what it is.

Wow it looks like the two new Celebrity twins will be nicely upgraded. I wonder if this season's trips to Bermuda are successful and can bring in the higher price points desired, that will then convince Celebrity to bring one of the sisters back again next summer. Otherwise I imagine they might head to Europe for the summer as Princess has done with the new Royal Princess, and then sail all over the globe in the other seasons.
