Royal Caribbean International's Empress of the Seas to Join Pullmantur Fleet

MIAMI, March 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Royal Caribbean International today announced plans to transfer Empress of the Seas to Pullmantur, the Madrid-based cruise and tour operator that parent company, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. purchased in November 2006.

"Empress of the Seas is a wonderful ship that has served our brand well," said Adam Goldstein, president, Royal Caribbean International. "This transfer will help to increase Pullmantur's capacity and meet demand for its distinctive style of cruise holidays in the European market."

The last voyage of Empress as part of the Royal Caribbean International fleet will be March 7, 2008. Guests booked on all sailings after this date will be contacted by Royal Caribbean International representatives to transfer existing reservations to similar accommodations onboard other Royal Caribbean ships. Royal Caribbean International has established a toll-free number for travel agents and guests with questions regarding the re-accommodated sailings. The toll-free number is (888) 281-9344.

Empress of the Seas joined the Royal Caribbean fleet in June 1990 and was built by Chantiers de L'Atlantique in St. Nazaire, France. She was refurbished in May 2004. The 48,563 gross-registered-ton ship has a double-occupancy guest capacity of 2,020.

Royal Caribbean International is a global cruise brand with 20 ships currently in service and three under construction. Liberty of the Seas, the cruise line's newest ship, which debuts in April 2007, will share the title of largest cruise ship at sea with sister ship Freedom of the Seas. At 160,000 GRT with a capacity of 3,634 guests double-occupancy, Liberty of the Seas will sail alternating Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami. The line also offers unique land-tour vacations in Alaska, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand through its cruisetour division. For additional information or to make reservations, go to www.royalcaribbean.com or call (800) 327-6700. For travel professionals, go to www.cruisingpower.com or call (800) 327-2056.

Pullmantur to gain a Royal Caribbean ship
26/3/2007
Royal Caribbean International announced plans to transfer Empress of the Seas to Pullmantur, the Madrid-based cruise and tour operator that Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. acquired in November.
The ship’s last voyage under the Royal Caribbean banner will be March 7, 2008.

‘This transfer will help to increase Pullmantur's capacity and meet demand for its distinctive style of cruise holidays in the European market,’ said RCI president Adam Goldstein.

Empress of the Seas joined the Royal Caribbean fleet in June 1990 as Nordic Empress. The ship was extensively refurbished and renamed in May 2004.

I guess this ship will be replacing the R7/BLUE MOON? Pullmantur will get a wonderful ship.

Now, ZENITH needs to move to Island Cruises in exchange for ISLAND ESCAPE.

Wow we really are not going to have any "mid" sized midlevel cruise ships left serving the US in a few years. I feel for Bermuda, which is seeing all of the ships able to serve Hamilton sailing away to serve the European market. Maybe HAL will transfer one of the Statendam sisters to the NYC - Bermuda route to get back to their roots. I have seen the Statendam in Hamilton Harbor so I know they fit

Yeah but have you been to Kings Wharf? It is thoroughly uninteresting and commericialized, except for the Maritime Museum. Hamilton is still the best port on the island, and I would put St. George's above K.W. as well. Though I would guess that the wharf might be a little closer to the beaches on the south shore of the island...

I was wondering just the other day how long RCI would be keeping her. Not as long as I thought.

Blue Moon (formerly R 7) is now the Celebrity Quest. After revitalization. she will start 12- & 14-night sailings October 19 to many first-time Carib ports and the PanCanal.

Yes, it is a great name. But, RCI has no history of reusing ship names. We'll have to see what they do. I still believe they should name the first Genesis ship Song of the Seas to honor their first ship, Song of Norway.

RCI has announced awhile ago that BLUE DREAM and BLUE MOON will be transferred to Celebrity Xpedition. I think Thad meant that she will become CELEBRITY QUEST.

I think that as RCI builds more ships former names will be re-used. They're just not that many good names to chose from or make up that sound right.

A line w/the opposite problem is Cunard. Plenty of wonderful names to pull from their past but no ships to put them on.

My 2nd and 3rd cruise were on board her when she was Nordic Empress, i thought she was quite interesting then now she is so so but i do like the name Nordic Empress a lot better than Empress of the Seas. Hope they will bring back the Nordic.

I bet Empress as it will be easier - just paint out the rest and given their past history that is exactly whay they will do, it seems that Pullmantur will become the dumping ground of all not wanted ships elsewhere.

I had been hoping it would be the Sovereign as at least it might have indicated that her 2 sisters might join at a later time thus giving them an upgrade but I suppose Spain is like us here in SA, not quite good enough as we have not had better ships in the past the general publics expectation is therefore lower, to some extent the same as UK until Oriana came along and Aussie until Princess started basing their newer ships down under.

I like the name Nordic is has some sort of grandeur and regal to it.
