13-year-old girl hospitalized in Miami after 5-story fall on cruise ship

MIAMI BEACH – A Coast Guard crew evacuated an injured 13-year-old girl from a cruise liner to a Miami hospital after she fell five stories early Friday, a spokesman said.

In an e-mail news release, the Coast Guard said the unidentified girl suffered mild head trauma from the five-deck plunge aboard the 680-foot-long Majesty, which was returning to its home port in Charleston, S.C. The ship is owned by Miami-based Norwegian Cruise Lines.

A company spokeswoman, AnneMarie Mathews, said the child fell down an interior stairwell, and not over a balcony as was earlier reported.

The incident occurred around 6:50 a.m. on Friday about three miles off Miami Beach.

A Coast Guard rendezvoused with the Majesty offshore and transferred the victim into a small boat. She was then brought to the Miami Beach Coast Guard station and at 7:24 a.m. was taken by ambulance to Jackson Memorial Hospital in nearby Miami. A condition report was not immediately available.

all of a sudden people are falling off..jumping off.."having sex and falling" whats next??? i bet you someone's gonna swing from an anchor one of these days....

It's a wonder that no one has yet "fallen" over the railing down through a tall atrium. That would make quite a splash in the Purser's Lobby, but at least they'd be able to find the body!

I must admit the glass railings that overlook the Atriums are a little scary. The feeling of openess with the glass I guess.In reality I would like to see them make these and the balcony railings higher. Maybe that would help prevent jumpers.
Falling 5 stories?? Interior stairwell?not on any ship I've been on where this is possible.
People fall all the time on ships as the steps can either be slippery or you catch your feet on the carpeting. Case in point,a few years ago my wife fell down a few stairs outside the theatre,nobody was around at the time of the fall,as she laid at the bottom of the stairs-dazed and regaining her senses a few people walked by and did NOT offer assistance-probably thought she was drunk. We don't drink!!!! When she made it back to our seats in the theatre I had to seek out a cabin steward to get some ice to place on the large bump on her leg.
Bad bruise,but we did not go to the medical dept. Maybe we should have and reported the incident.

Have you never looked over the stairway railing down through the decks? On some ships there is an open space going down 8 or 10 decks, especially the big ships like QE2 or NORWAY. It's a poor quality photo, but here is staircase "G" on QE2, back when she was new:

Sadly - these are not really concidered "big ships" anymore...they're more like the average (kind of like the 20 000 grt from the 80's - let's just call it progress LOL

What was this girl doing? Sliding down the banisters? It would be easy to fall this far is doing such stupid things.

You wouldn't survive a Costa Classica fall, that's for sure.

How do you fall in an interior stairwell??? Ok, the one on QE2 is possible, anyone got a pic of the one on Majesty?

At first I thought it would be a fall from one of the 10 story atriums you see now a days.

Malcolm, It's like the airline situation we have today, because of crazy people we all suffer.
It's getting to the point where bus or train travel is faster than flying.
Even in some ports,you go through security(the typical machine scanners) just to get onto the dock,then again once onboard.

Wow Pam, that stair well on the Classica is very high, looks about 8 or 9 decks. I would hope no one falls thru the atrium of one of those Radiance class ships. Now those are high!

vivavegas, The Majesty goes VERY close to the coast of Florida when heading southbound out of Charleston, to take advantage of the currents, gets a good tailwind, so to speak. It's a very interesting part of the trip to see where you are, you can see the tall Vehicle assembly building at the Cape and alot of interesting things, usually you get by Miami when lots of the ships are leaving, makes for good ship spotting.

She apparently was trying to beat some friends down the stairs and hopped on the railing and went over the edge,....can't picture it myself but, apparently it can happen.

As children, we all do stupid things; as adults, we get arrested for them.

That is so true! I wonder if the parents will try to sue the cruise line but being foreign flagged, I don't know if that would go anywhere-not that it should of course!
