These villages which have been turned into shopping malls are indeed typical for Alaska BUT these 'hot spots' in Alaska are usually also very isolated - many ports of call on a typcial cruise to Alaska can not even be reached via streets or trains - Alaska is VERY large and there IS still a LOT of wilderness in Alaska.Norway is not really densely populated either - but the settlement structure is older and more streaky. Another major difference between Alaska and Norway is that the parts of Alaska visited by cruise ships are more southern than Norway. Also, there is no glacier in the mainland of Norway that reaches the sea (if I remember right - there are of course many in Svalbard) - whereas there are many calving glaciers in Alaska.
