Orient Line has just announced that the MARCO POLO will sail with them until March, 2008, at which time she will be sold to an undisclosed buyer. You can read the press release here:

In the release Veitch says "The timing of Marco Polo's departure always revolved around finding a good next owner, and I am pleased to say we have found one."

Boy, he really makes it sound like he actually likes old ships. I know it is just marketing spin but he certainly doesn't need to say that.

Then again, maybe he just means "finding someone silly enough to pay our price for an old ship"...

Definitely some preventative damage control after the NORWAY debacle!

So, any guesses on who the buyer is? Saga, Louis, one of the Spanish lines?

I am betting she is going to Swan Hellenic. A quick refurb in Gibralter and a reposition to Soton for her christening and Minerva III will be born.

He would have equally sold her to a bad next owner too!

Maybe it was a BOGOF (buy one get one free) type deal and NCL threw in the SS United States for good measure?

Olsen and Saga are probably unlikely as they have already expanded their respective fleets.

Ending her Orient Line days in Lisbon means she'll be outside the window of George Potamianos, owner of Arcalia Shipping (ie FUNCHAL, PRINCESS DANAE, ARION and ATHENA). He's been on the lookout for a classic vessel to add to his fleet - maybe this is the one?

Rumour has it that the new Swan Hellenic 'owners' have considerable financial muscle backing them. Would they go for a 40+ year old ship?

Hi all

Until recent years Swan Hellenic always chartered
in older ships for their cruises.

The older passengers they carry did not seem to want the glitz of the modern super liners.

Rich,

it will only take about $3 million to make her SOLAS compliant.

I've been told by a reliable source, but have not confirmed, that the ship was sold to Discovery.

As soon as I read this - I thought DWC would be the company that pick her up. makes sense...will be interesting to see if it's true

The only challenge is that they are also bringing onboard the original Minerva (if that plan is still a go) - so three rather different ships - makes it hard to brand efffectively - we'll have to see.

Discovery or All Leisure?. Which would certainly tie in with their AIM listing.

I hope MARCO POLO will find a good operator for many years ... What about ARCALIA? Her last cruise will end at Lisbon ... ?!?

One more classic ship in their fleet... Could be a nice addition. But is only speculation!

Karsten

oops, it was posted earlier ... Sorry, I saw it too late.

Hopefully she will have another 5-10 years (or more) of successful service in front of her! Compare this to the past when a 30-year old ship was usually finished off with w/little chance of another career.

Hi Pam,

All Leisure - Discovery World/Voyages of Disscovery. The AIM lisiting and this sale are an interesting coincidence - or perhaps not.

Discovery is a Strong Possibility as it all was the creation of Gerry Herrod and I believe he is still involved in Discovery as a consultant or something with them so the Marco Polo would surely be a good match for them! Definentley would expand Discovery's brand and grow it! She would be a peerfect addition to them!
And dont forget Marco Polo was reconstructed at a considerable cost by Gerry Herrod and she is in as good or better shape than any other old ship, about as comparable as the Athena.

I toured the Marco Polo a few years ago. Although very charming, I was surprised that she is so much more beautiful on the outside than on the inside. She looked well worn and had rather dull-decor in my opinion, compared to Olsen's ship for example.

However, it was nothing that a good refit could not put right.

If she's so close from being SOLAS compliant, I guess it wouldn't be a bad deal for a line to acquire her. A few Millions $ refit to upgrade her to SOLAS 2010 and to redisign her interiors and she will be a quite valuable ship for many more years.

"Marco Polo has an extremely loyal following and the Orient Lines brand is unique in what it offers..." said Colin Veitch, president and CEO of NCL Corporation.

...we are selling her because we want to concertrate on our newer ships such as those of NCLA which have an extremely un-loyal following of dissapointed past customers.

Well if it is Discovery it will be a shame from one point of view as I would have preffered that they buy Pacific and refit her in the same way they did her sister and then again the 2 sisters will be together.

Jekyll,

if DWC/VOD has indeed acquired MP, they might very well sub-charter Explorer II (ex-Minerva) to Lord Sterling as he has expressed an interest in chartering the ship from them.

Malcolm, as you said: 'a few years ago'.
I visited her last year August and she looked very pretty. Meanwhile she had a refurbishing during the winter and she looks even better.

Have a look to my photos on my

Good to hear Willem. I was not aware that she a refit.

I recall thinking in terms of size and layout she is not unlike other charming ships such as Black Watch/Boudica and Saga Ruby etc.

I though NCL/ Star stated that not only the ship would be sold, but the whole name of Orient Lines with it. Any news or thoughts about that statement? Maybe Orient Lines will be continued just with a new owner.

It looks like Orient Lines will just die - the Press Release implies the new owner already has a brand.

"This unique ship will, from the summer of 2008, have a new lease of life serving a new market under an established brand. The new owner will be announcing the acquisition very soon."
