Royal Caribbean International has made its long-anticipated move to deploy a Voyager-class vessel from the U.S. West Coast. The company announced that Mariner of the Seas will sail from Los Angeles starting in late February 2009.
The ship will operate 27 seven-night sailings to the Mexican Riviera. Ports are Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta.

‘We are thrilled to bring one of the best products in the industry to Los Angeles to meet the demand for Royal Caribbean’s active style of cruising from the U.S. West Coast,’ said Alice Norsworthy, svp marketing for RCI.

The 2004-built ship offers features including an ice skating rink, rock-climbing wall and the Royal Promenade with its restaurants, lounges, shops and themed parades.

Mariner of the Seas will deploy from the East Coast to Los Angeles by sailing around South America. Details of the repositioning voyages will be announced in the near future.

Bookings for the Mexican Riviera cruises open on Wednesday.

This is exciting!!!!! Someone told me Adventure was the most likely ship to sail west coast and to Alaska, but Mariner is just fine, and was nuilt in 2003 and not 2004 I believe. Will she be going up to Alaska and stay on the West Coast? Too bad 2009 is so far away....

Im surprized that they decided to pull a ship from PortC. They always have a strong market due to all great ships and great crews from that port. It leaves in 2009 and the Genesis class is out then...wink..wink....

Read on another board that crew members on the Mariner are reporting that the Liberty will move to PC in 09. Makes sense since the Genesis will be entering service then.

Might be kinda hard to dock both a freedom class and a Genesis class at dodge Island.

Freedom then might move to Saturdays and Genesis to Sundays at Miami, that way the port is not overpopulated with cruise ships. Remember that Genesis is not much longer than Freedon-class.

Will be sorry to see Mariner leave but it makes sense with the Independence and 2 genesis ships on the way. I just came off of the May 20th sailing of Mariner and had the best cruise ever. Met some great people (Michelle from Destin ) and had a blast. Liberty in PC is fine with me.

I certainly hope not. Alaska needs to do the same thing Bermuda did and impose a limit on the number of passengers/ships that a port can take in in a single day. This is just another thing the tiny ports of call and the pristine environment doesnt need. At what point does Alaksa cease to be the destination and just a distraction? This just may be the answer...
