Hi All

Louis Cruises website is now showing a ship named ' Cristal ' bookable for various length cruises in August.

Could this be the new name for the mv ' Opera '.

No other details of the ship are at present available.

It must be indeed as she actually starts on 20 July doing the same 3 & 4 day cruises which Sea Diamond was doing. Ruby commences sailing ex Limassol wef 22 July on 3 & 5 [& one 6 ] day cruises. The fleet list still however shows Opera [TBL].

hi there,

Louis Cruise Line seems to be consistent
in naming their ships, however can someone explain me why they keep the name Orient Queen??

i'll be in Kusadasi in 6 weeks time to witness the arrival of Cristal, Emerald, Sapphire and Perla
while former Ivory will be there too as Aegean Two

regards
b. Joe

Hi Joe,

I think that has to do with the fact that ORIENT QUEEN is chartered from Abou Merhi cruises of Libanon. It might be something in the charter contract that prohibits them from renaming the ship.

Ralph is right in saying that ORIENT QUEEN is on charter and while they have a purchase option, until such time as they exercised this, they cannot rename the ship, albeit they have changed her registry to Greece.

Have noted that Louis have removed the name CRISTAL from their website schedules and have reverted to OPERA (TBR) in all references. Either (a) they have changed their mind and are not now giving her this name, (b) someone has objected to this name or there is already a CRISTAL on the Greek register, or (c) the webmaster changed the name before Louis were ready to go public with it!

Hi All

With Louis Cruises being fined 1.5 million, I presume Euros, over the polution problems with the Sea Diamond, it is always possible it could give them a cash flow problem which could delay the Opera joining their fleet..

Neil,

I highly doubt this as they are covered by their P&I insurors for events such as this. Additionally, given Louis' financial resources, I doubt that 1.5 million will throw them into a financial tailspin.

The Louis Group will not have any difficulty paying the fine. The schedules for the new ship are still listed, but Louis has removed the name CRISTAL from their website (which you originally pointed out to us!) after only a few days and reverted to OPERA (TBR)!

Either their webmaster was rather premature in making the changes, or another ship on the Greek Registry has been found with the same name, or thirdly, Louis has decided not to go with that name after all!!

Evidentally Roederer objected to the name, their luxury champagne is called Cristal and they hold copyright on it in the EU. And jolly nice stuff it is and jolly expensive too.

Hi Mike SA

At first I thought you were joking about Roederer objecting to the name CRISTAL! But then, nothing should surprise me these days! I would have expected a problem had Louis decided to call the ship COKE, PEPSI or RIBENA, but how many people know about this exclusive champagne?

Was any official statement released by Roederer?

Hiccup...

It appears to be "Louis Roederer Cristal"; I must admit I did not know of the Louis part. Only Cristal is usually referred to. There are also 2 beers named Cristal, Cuban & Chilean see Wikipedia. Considering the blurb there about rappers, I thought they might welcome the additional free marketing.

Shame I rather liked the name, perhaps just Crystal? but it doesn't have the same feeling.

CRYSTAL is too close to Crystal Cruises, so there may have been an objection from there too!

Reminds me of Princess Cruises who sue every small boat owner who dares paint the word 'Princess' on the hull of their little pride and joy!

That was a bit stupid of me. I never even thought of Crystal Cruises! There are many Crystal XXXX ships though already. How Princess got away with Coral Princess I don't know, guess small companies don't have the gall to argue or are not so bothered when there is obviously no direct competiton. The Olympic/Olympia debacle was always so daft too.

So now we sit and check on Louis' site every day for another name.

Should I sue my neighbor for being called Carlos? Hell, there's more than 20 Carlos Fernandez' found in Miami's White Pages, I'll sue them as well!

OPERA has arrived overnight at Hellenic Shipyards in Eleusis Bay, with Louis desperate enough to invite local dock workers involved in the refit to come up with ideas for the new name for this ship!! They have almost exactly a month to find something that fits the bill, without any risks associated with it! Perhpas as with Renaissance, we should start with L1.

There are really plenty of names they could use, though I am not sure how they transpose into Greek. Opal would be in keeping with the 'Op', but Amber or Jade would be nice; so would Olivine.

For anyone wanting to follow the Piraeus & surrounding area movements, there is a free AIS site here.
