This is definately a change from the funnel design on the previous Destiny/Conquest class ships. Notice the angled forward vent (normally a flat circle on previous ships), and the aft end of the funnel is a vented "birdcage" form similar to Carnival Pride/Spirit/Legend/Miracle.
Can anyone explain why the design was altered?
I can't understand why SPLENDOR has a new funnel design. Clearly it will not incorporate a glass dome such as the Spirit Class ships, and SPLENDOR is essentially a Conquest Class ship so why the design change? We all know Carnival does not spend money on a redesign if they don't have to.
I've looked at the deck plans for SPLENDOR on the Carnival website, and I'm still not sure why the funnel could not have remained the same as on other Conquest Class ships. Something disappointing with the SPLENDOR is that her main lounge decks follow the typical Carnival arrangement rather than the Costa arrangement. I much prefer the Costa arrangement with the large dancing lounge and smaller casino. I guess it was a pipe dream to ever think Carnival would reduce the casino size!
I'm actually considering a cruise on SPLENDOR next year to Northern Europe. I swore I would never sail on a Conquest Class ship again but I guess I should never say never!

Im sure it will be just as big as the current funnels of the origional carnival vessels

Could be their direct connection to the late 1960s Canadian Pacific livery combined w/ss France's funnel(s) design.

You would think those were the reasons, but when I first heard of Carnival I had no idea of the logo origins, nor what the FRANCE funnel looked like. I think it has more to do with the fact that Carnival Cruise Lines was really my first introduction to the world of ships and cruising. My parents took a cruise on the CARNIVALE in 1976, and when they returned I was absolutely fascinated by the experience and the ship itself. I was only 10 years old at the time. I couldn't get enough information on the ship, and I still have their ticket packet to this day. I went on to take several cruises on Carnival as a child, and worked part time for them while attending college at University of Miami. I much prefer the more innocent Carnival of yesteryear over the more homogenized corporate giant today, but they will always have a special place in my heart.

This is one thing I will praise Farcus for. He developed one of the most recognized icons in the cruising world with his funnel. A brilliant branding idea that has endured the test of time. Carnival's funnels still look contemporary with very little change to the basic shape.

Or so the story goes..George+
Carnival used the basic shape of CP's late 1960s green and white funnel livery when they purchased Empress of Canada. Carnival slightly altered the logo w/a more pronounced 'C' shape and changed the band colors to red, white and blue. During a later refit, the livery on Mardi Gras' funnel was modified again w/the white portion reduced and curved to a crescent shape that we see on Carnival ships today.
Colors changed and triangle softened...
Revised stack with thinner more consistent "crescent"
I have to say what a pretty ship she was. She looked good in every livery, from CP to Royal Olympic.
I would like to see a newbuild (a completely new design) from Carnival called 'Carnival Mardi Gras' in honor of their first (and best looking) ship. The sisters could be called 'Carnival Festivale and Tropicale'.

i must admit that Carnival have awarm place in my heart too.when i was a child, Carnival seems to me like a legend. and i remember seeing their brochures, looking at the Jubillee, Ecstasy, Festivale (which , to my opinion was their best looking ship) and just dream about cruising onboard themat some stage my big brother has worked for them.
today as an employee in a big tourist company's ceuise department i hapaned to sell just little of Carnival cause there are simply better cruise companies (like RCCL,HAL,CELEBRITY)
