I was fumbling around on Wikapedia and came across an article on RCI's new Genesis Class. I know that Wikapedia can be wrong but this is what the article states:

"The ship is projected to have new features, rumored to be the addition of a bowling alley complex, an outdoor trapeze area, a billiards lounge similar to those found on the Radiance Class Ships, a larger dining room, and a much longer Royal Promenade shopping and recreation area. Much larger staterooms and balcony areas are reported to be on the ship, as well as a much larger variety of dining, bar, and lounge options. Also, it is expected to have a "Central Park" area at the rear of the ship with real trees and other foliage.

There is no official name for any of the ships in the Genesis class, but several speculations report that the first sister ship of the Genesis of the Seas is to be named Creation of the Seas, following RCL's ever-popular naming scheme."

Could this be true? A park onboard? I actually was wondering if they would put a botanical gardens or a simulated beach! Very interesting ideas to say the least. Any thoughts?

Boy, if that's all true. What's next?? Squirrels in your stateroom? I say enough is enough. How many more one upsmanships can these cruise lines do?? I guess the next thing you know, they'll capsize a ship just for fun as a package deal just to get people to sail it and instead of the rooms being upside down, they're right side up. I'm sorry, it's old school showing. I really think that's way too much.

Bowling at sea, not for me...

Bigger mall, have a ball...

A lounge to shoot pool, that will be cool...

Central park, be careful after dark...

Show me the pool bar, I won't be far...

A bigger lido deck, to there I will trek...

But 6,000 peeps, gives me the creeps.

I think there are some well intended people contributing as much out of a desire to being able do something, as they are from any authoritative understanding of the project.

Were there rumors of substance out there, I very seriously doubt that they would first appear on Wikipedia. They would appear in certain blogs and message boards. The youngster I have as a volunteer Teen Moderator on my project, knows all the rumors, and the more he talks about them among his friends, the more they seemed to take on an air of reality. I’m working at teaching him how to sense the occasional truth to rumors. But even more experienced folks get hooked on cruising, excited about a new ship, and get whipped into a frenzy about it. Expectations are so high for this new ship, its somewhat understandable.

By now, the die is all be cast however. The major features have to be known, and the details have to be at a moderately advanced stage at least. Will something leak? Maybe, but I would suspect that soon after the introductory news related to Independence of the Seas, we’ll see the start of a very tightly scripted marketing process. That might include more specifics that we are wanting to know.

I’d bet everybody, even those that dislike large cruise ships, have a very distinct interest in seeing what Royal Caribbean does.

The ‘Park’ idea is probably wrong or at least an exaggeration! A tree or two might be a possibility?

I recall that the QM2’s winter garden sounded like it was going to be a ten acre hydroponic Garden in the original press releases. In reality is a much more modest room. In fact some ship fans were a little disappointed with the finished room, because of our unrealistically high expectations.

For years there have been tropical beach areas on the drawing boards for huge new fantasy ships--a lagoon-like pool with sand and palm trees. Perhaps the "park" rumor developed from something like that?

Recab,

I don't bowl. Bowling is a blue collar sport and has no place on a cruise ship.

The beach scene though would be cool. lagoon, sand, palms, ect....

Don't RCI aim their product at the masses, which includes many 'blue collar' workers?

I can feel a class-divide discussion coming!

Malcom,
Thats what I think. For trees they weigh a ton and the soil they are in weigh as much. If it is as much as they "say" it is, this is an aweful lot of weight to be adding to the stern area. especially with the natural weight of that area. I wonder if it will be fake trees. That would be carnival-esque, and in poor taste. I remember that the WORLD has severe issues over a real grss putting green!!!

It's beginning to look like there will be an area called 'Central Park', but what exactly that means is likely to be a closely guarded secret for quite a while yet.

Dave,

I can only assume that you only play polo and golf and don't partake in "blue collar" activities such as drinking beer, baseball, football, basketball, hockey or NASCAR. Nor do you participate in "sexy legs" or cannonball/belly-flop contests while on a cruise as you would only cruise in the finest of suites on the likes of Seabourn and Sea Dream. And surely you must live in a gated, country-club community no?

I've not heard such a preposterous or patently offensive and downright degrading comment on this board in a while.

Stepping off soap boax...

Even thought we all have opinions, this one is a load of horse manure. You are in no postion to really say what does and doenst belong on a cruise ship. The term 'arrogant arse' comes to mind.

Who are you to say what does and does not belong on a cruise ship?

Worse, you seem to be trying to dictate who belongs on a cruise ship (not "blue collar" people, presumably) .

I think if we check out Dave's posts - and pictures - in this thread, we'll find his tongue is firmly in his blue-collar cheek.

NWLB ,

Not sure if you are telling me that I contributed because I wanted something to do and I dont understand the scope of the project? Maybe I am taking your post the wrong way. I apologize if I do! As I stated I know that Wikapedia could be wrong but I came across it and I was interested in the possibility of what could be onbaord this groundbreaking vessel. Apparently, in another thread someone who is close to the source has mentioned a "Central Park" area onboard Genesis. Whether its a park I don't know but it is exciting to discuss what may be on this ship. I too know how to pick and choose and decipher whether a rumour may have some truth to it. As for this rumour I beleive it does for a few reasons. The stern of this ship seems to extend from the back of the vessel in addition a postage stamp is being created in Finland that features the stern area which would lead me to beleive something of importance is there. Then when I heard about the Central Park idea it got me thinking and I put two and two together and theorized that the Royal Promanade may exist to a park/courtyard area located at the stern. Possibly there are cabins located here with a view of this feature. I dont think its a far fetched idea.

Acutally if it was done well it could be stunning, chuck a frizbee or 2, chill out on the astroturf, get mugged (joke) and drive in a hrse and carraige !

As mentioned the problem here would be weight, most likely we would end up with fake trees, that said there are some really good ones out there especially of the palm variety so even fake ones could look great.

However why would one want to go on a ship to sit on a beach ? Give me my teak decking and a good bar steward please and even that is a rarity now a days.

Maybe "Central Park" will not be a natural park with real vegetation. A park is also a place were people gather, usually (but not always) in a largely natural state for the enjoyment of the public having rest and recreation facilities.

One always tried to mimic life ashore aboard ships. This is dating back to the liners and a time where people did not want to be aboard ships but had to be aboard ships. A park could be a modern version of the winter garden lounges found aboard other ships - and it would only be consequent to mimic a beach aboard one of these floating resorts. It certainly would be in a line with all these features that are astonishing because they are aboard a ship: Many atria, ice skating rinks, flow riders, bowling alleys, plantetaria, theaters etc. found aboard ships would not even be close to get our attention if they were ashore - the same will probably true for this 'park'.
Weight is always an issue - but some trees or larger plants (grass?) in a lower position aboard a 220 000 gt vessel is certainly a different issue than a putting green on the upper most deck aboard 'The World'.

I'm sure the marketing people at all the cruise lines"Brainstorm" on ideas for their new ships. These are the things people want to see on a ship even if it's a novelty.
Real grass- I doubt it! Who would cut it and it probably wouldn't grow well in a salt water air enviorment.
Anyone for tennis???

It is not easy and whether it makes sense is another story - but there is already real grass aboard 'The World'.
