About one hour ago we came home from our trip to Rotterdam, where we watched the arrival of Queen Victoria.
We met some old friends with whom we spent the day by a.o. visiting the Euromast.
Photos will be available tomorrow.
I noticed on the webcams that she departed one hour late.

Aad - Spectacular photos, as always!

It is interesting to see that Cunard seems to have broken with the 'fake teak' pattern for the pool decks. And very dismaying to see the cheap Princess-style blue mesh deck chairs. On Cunard one expects better.

I agree, the pictures are superb.

But here we can clearly see Carnival putting their hands. Cheap (cruise ship) deck chairs, fake teak (immitation looks so bad), and a very large sign that says: No Jumping or Diving. I still have not seen the sign saying STAY 50 FEET AWAY. The ship is not bad looking but many details remind me of a mass market ship, like Carnival. I really don't feel shipwise that's this ship is Cunard grade less an ocean liner. Maybe the cruise or "ocean liner" feel is different to the ship itself.

Interesting overhead shot of QV's stern. Just returned from a week on her near-sister, the Zuiderdam. (Tried to post a review but it wouldn't take.) Zuiderdam's whirlpools are at the other end of the lido pool but appear to be the same size, which is WAY too small. Nice to see Cunard didn't go with the Magradome like Holland America did. The midships pool, even with the dome doors open still feels indoors. Holland America is modifying its older Vista class vessels to match their newer ones which have added cabins aft. Interesting that QV doesn't have the additional cabins.

Yes, it looks a compass rose pattern, not a 'fake teak' pattern.

Woops. I stand corrected. They have a Magradome. Its half as big and sideways. Hope that helps.

At least the "Grill's Deck" has beautiful deck chairs and cushions. Everyone else suffers!

Seriously, the deck chairs are metal with mesh, which is nicer than many on QE2 and QM2 which are really cheap plastic (just like HAL, Carnival, and Princess uses). These deck chairs seem a slightly more high quality.

I have yet to see a picture of the wrap-around promenade deck (hopefully there are wood deck chairs) and a standard outside cabin (which I will reside in on the crossing).

Ernie

ps - fantastic photos, and from a different angle from what we have seen before. Thanks for sharing!

Amazing pictures Aad. Thanks for sharing. I am glad Cunard/Carnival gave the QV a tiered aft deck. The decking look very slippery when wet...

It is really surprising. This kind of flooring is generally not ideal but to see it aboard a ship that tries to capitalize on being decorated like an old ship is strange at best.
One might 'buy into' this retro kitsch decor but this plastic deck just looks cheap - even for someone who does not know much about (other) ships. People might believe that it has to be that way aboard modern ships these days - but it certainly will not be considered as sophisticated.

Her near sister 'Queen Elizabeth' most likely will have her superstructure pushed all the way to the stern. HAL's new Eurodam got that unattractive design feature and for some reason (thankfully) QV did not.

On 12 December 2007, two Cunard Queens called at Rotterdam. Not taking any risks for a possible collision, it was decided that QE2 should be docked at a container terminal in Waalhaven. The brand new Queen Victoria berthed at the Cruise Terminal at Wilhelminakade.
We had the pleasure to meet David Hume, Marjorieann Matuszek, Martin Grant and Anthony Cooke.

This new photo-album can be accessed (as usual) via my website.

Interesting about the teak decks, because I'm sure Cunards brochures used to refer to QE2s " gleaming teak decks", but in the latest edition they are now called "famous decks". Dropped maybe because they could not say the same of QV? Or am I reading too much into this.

Together with Roger we drove somewhat late to the Wilhelminakade. Driving at the Boompjes you are able to see the Wilhelminakade. So the Queen Victoria was inn. Roger calmely said
quote:
She looks like a HAL ship nothing special at all how dissapointing.

He mentioned the pictures he saw of the Vista class and found the ship not better looking then the other ones. Later he called theme assembly line ships. And his look on QV was said over and over again by many visitors. You don't fool Rotterdammers they are ussed to Vista we have 4 under the Dutch flag.

My opinion she looks fine and certainly she is not a ugly ship or look like a ocean liner. But one in a long row of similar looking vessels who are still build. Hope with the unnamed HAL and upcoming Elizabeth i really hope the design is dropped by Carnival.

The QE2 sadly was berthed on comment of here captain at the waalhaven ECT container dock. First we thought the call was canceled but not fore long. i spotted here funnel and bridge above the shed.
Roger and i decided to drive to Schiedam and viewed here departure from there. And what sight that was all lights ablaze coming out the Waalhaven she looks splendid. The QE2 is one of Roger's favorite passenger vessels (together with Rotterdam 5/6)
happy this was not here last in July 18 2008 she will make here last call to Rotterdam.

Pictures here

Greetings Ben.
