USA Today and RCI have launched a contest to name the Genesis ships. Winners will recieve a 2-night pre-inagural cruise on IOTS and a 7-night cruise onboard either Genesis ships. Sounds good.

Well I entered my two names today. It will be interesting to see what names they choose but at least it should be something different for a change.

My two choices:

LEVIATHAN OF THE SEAS
PIONEER OF THE SEAS

The former was an easy one, honoring the late Frank Braynard whose favorite ship was LEVIATHAN and also the ship herself, which is a previous 'biggest ship'.

The latter took a bit longer. I will not mention any of the other things I thought of lest any of you steal them and wind up winning as a result .

I resisted the temptation, given the 'Central Park' rumors, to nominate something like TURF OF THE SEAS, but anyway, it seems like SOLSTICE will be stealing Genesis' rumored thunder in that respect .

i am sure she will wow all her pax. and I think it would be nice to see the Sovereign name used again.

However I must admit to thinking the "Super Fat ATM Floating on the Seas" might also be appro. given her sheer bulk, lets face it she is no Andrea Doria look wise although not the ugliest at sea either, its just there will be so much of her.

Named after the Space Shuttles or the fictional space ship & ship these Space Shuttles were named after?
I hope it will not be Atlantis of the Seas.

Why do they always have these contests for Americans only???? Seems like, as always, the rest of the world is not important enough.

Americana of the Seas
Protectionist of the Seas
Ignorance of the Seas.....

I think I entered INNOVATION OF THE SEAS and something else. I can't remember the second one. The entry rules stated they wanted a name that would represent all the amazing things this ship will offer.

In regards to contest rules, I'm sure they would like to open it up to the entire World, but I imagine they can't for legal reasons. I suppose each country has their own legalities in the way they regulate these contests.

Maybe it doesn't seem fair, but consider: this contest is sponsored by an American newspaper and a US-base cruise line, to name ships based in the US and aimed at the US market.

I'm sure there are plenty of Norwegian and British newspapers which run local contests which are not made available to foreigners. And if a cruise line like Fred.Olsen or Thomson ran a contest, which disqualified North Americans, plenty of people might not think that was fair, either, but I don't know how upset they would get over it.

These are great names, lasuvidaboy. My favorite by far. In fact, I recommended these names months ago on a CT board. However, I didn't enter these names in RCI's contest. I just don't believe the company has the depth or sense of history to actually pick these fantastic names from their past. Remember, a ship's name is primarily a tool of marketing--not a matter of tradition.

For this reason I submitted:

Wonder of the Seas
Marvel of the Seas

These fit the criteria RCI laid out in the contest: the two names are thematically related, they emphasize the incredible features and size of the ships, and they can be used to market the ships. Remember, RCI went to town with the "Freedom of the Seas" name. All the marketing focused on freedom of choice.

That's what I thought as well. W/most 'contests' there are residency, employment (you can't work for or have family that works for the sponsor) and other conditions etc. etc.

I'm not a big fan of the names I submitted, but I felt it was more in line with what Royal Caribbean would be looking for. I would much prefer something that reflects the history of the line like others have mentioned, but I don't think RCI has any interest in going that direction. Pity. The same can be said of Carnival. I would love to see MARDI GRAS, CARNIVALE, TROPICALE, and FESTIVALE resurrected but I don't think we ever will. These names don't reflect "Today's Carnival".

Afew years ago I submitted "Romance of the Seas" but never heard from RCI if this could be in the running for one of their new ships.
