It was Carnival in January, Celebrity in February, and now in March it's Costa's turn--another one overboard. See story here.

March is typically Spring Break time. I wonder if we will see some drunken college students taking the plunge. Not sure how many college persons cruise but I assume we have some??

I saw this this morning also. Bay News 9 did a bit on TV and showed a picture of the Sovereign of the Seas. The talking heads must not cruise.

This idiot caused the rest of the PAX to miss Key West. I would be pissed.

It's interesting that you rarely if ever read about a passenger overboard on a Crystal, Silversea, Seabourn, or Regent ship. It always seems to be Carnival (mostly) and other mass-market ships to a lessor degree. It seems to solidify the stereotypical Carnival passenger we have discussed before on CT. Having sailed on Carnival 10+ times myself, I know this type of passenger exists, but I rarely see them anymore. Of course I only sail Carnival during the off season, and never on a cruise shorter than 7-days. That seems to help the situation. I think a three or four day Carnival cruise right now would be a living hell.

If every Carnival Cruise Line ship sailed full every week I am guessing thats close to over 45-50,000 passengers sailing every week? Assuming the figure is close, I find it hard to classify 'jumpers' as a 'sterotypical Carnival passenger' if 1 person out of 175,000 commits this act every month, or 12 out of every 2.1 million passengers every year. Now if we inlcuded Carnival Corps ships (because this latest report was on a Costa ship) we can bump that figure up to roughly over 145,000 a week, 600,000+ a month, or over 7 million passengers a year. Still, at 1 or 2 jumpers a month thats hard to classify as 'typical'. About 2-3 people commit suicide off of the Golden Gate Bridge every month but it rarely makes the news. If the Golden Gate Bridge gets over 10 million visitors per year, (following your logic) that statistic would then say that the average visitor to the Golden Gate Bridge would be a jumper?

My "logic" as you put it was nothing more than a casual comment, nothing scientific. It was based on the fact that Carnival Cruise Lines seems to account for many, if not most of the occurrences I read about concerning man overboard. I also rarely (if ever) read about man overboard on the luxury lines, not even one.

Carnival has changed over the years and now attracts many families and seniors, but none the less the line still has a party reputation compared to the competition. Many people still see a stereotypical Carnival passenger as a young, blue collar person that drinks a fair bit. I don't think this is true on all Carnival cruises, but probably not far off on shorter cruises that sail from drive-to out-ports such as Mobile, Jacksonville, etc, especially during Spring Break. Throw in a lot of really young students and it's an interesting mix.

My guess is most cases of man overboard involve excessive drinking, and Carnival does seem to have more cases of man overboard, so put two and two together. Again nothing scientific, just a casual observation.
