With the NORWEGIAN MAJESTY now confirmed to stay with NCL at least till April '09, and PRIDE OF ALOHA moving to Star, I wonder what will happen with the NORWEGIAN DREAM. Is it still planned to move her to Star, like her sister?

Brgds.

A team from Louis Cruise Lines inspected the NORWEGIAN DREAM last week. Stay tuned...!

N. Majesty is there for longer than that as I think she is signed up for Bermuda Cruises for next season as well, sailing from other eastern US Ports like Baltimore, Philadelphia and Charleston. So that would take her to November 2009 with NCL, at least according to the news from Bermuda last fall. But I do think that the Dream will end up in Europe next year.

The number of prangs she has had - the panelbeaters ?

Louis would be a good home for her.

So, does that mean the Dream won't receive the Freestyle 2.0 upgrades Norwegian has been promising that would be complete on the entire fleet by June 1, 2008? We're scheduled for the Bermuda run on October 26th. If that's her last trip with Norwegian it should be interesting in terms of level of service, etc.

The Norwegian Dream and Sea were built on the cheap both in design and execution. My understanding is that they offer the worst of an old liner and worst of a modern cruiseship with the advantages of niether.

They are the automotive equivalent to a Ford Tempo or an Austin Marina.

Seems to me if it floats, Louis will buy it.

I have suffered enough from the poor food, poor services, poor facilities and disjoint design of sister ship SuperStar Aquarius . Please, Star Cruises, don't let the nightmare happen again!

If there wasn't a 'Louis' you would be bemoaning the loss of yet more ships.... they seem to have some money for such things.

I enjoyed Norwegian Dream, I do appreciate many however do not, although asides from AIDA Fans, is there any other cruise ship that has her own fan club as N Dream does? She obviously appeals to many and quite quirky with layout, long ladders, nooks & crannies. More interesting than all straight decks, companionways etc.

While I had definitely read that about the Seaward, it was my understanding that when new, the Windward and Dreamward were considered quite nice ships, well designed and built. Now I don't think the stretching really helped either ship, and Windward has been majorly altered now by Star, but were /are they that bad?

Having sailed on the NORWEGIAN SEA, there are obvious evidence she was built on the cheap, but I thought her design layout was accepted. Although I have not sailed on the NORWEGIAN DREAM/WIND, I think the lengthening ruined her deck layout. Seeing the changes done by Star, NORWEGIAN SEA and DREAM both suffered in public spaces. Most of the lounges were either divided or replaced with casinos and VIP rooms.

NORWEGIAN DREAM will be a good addition to the Louis fleet. Louis gets a fairly modern ship, with large cabins, and vast amount of public rooms. Now would Louis charter her out rather than operate her?

I heard that a cruiseline surveyed her for a purchase and found too much mechanically wrong.

Here are some of the travelpage reviews

Mark Goldberg loves her, but review is very old

http://www.cruiseserver.net/travelpage/ships/no_dream.asp

Here are some not so good reviews

http://www.cruiseserver.net/travelpage/yourfav/yfc_ncl_dream_11.asp

http://www.cruiseserver.net/travelpage/yourfav/yfc_ncl_dream_4.asp

http://www.cruiseserver.net/travelpage/yourfav/yfc_ncl_dream_3.asp

I have had some wonderful cruises on awful ships. Not so good cruises on great ships.

SEAWARD was definitely, as a friend once described her, "a tin can", but DREAMWARD and WINDWARD were really very nice.

I have no idea what they are like now as I have not been on one in a long time, since before the "stretch". But having been on both SEAWARD and WINDWARD there was really no comparison between the two - it was very obvious that WINDWARD was a vastly superior ship in every way.

Some claim the stretch ruined them, others say it was an improvement - as I said, I can't opine because I haven't been on one post-stretch, but from what I've seen they still look nice enough. The very "pastel" decor now looks rather dated but with a suitable refit I imagine they could be very nice ships again.

That said, like David I have heard some not-so-wonderful things about their mechanical condition - however, I have no idea if this really is a result of them being built on the cheap, or a result of the "stretch", or bad maintenance, or what.

Either way, from a passenger's perspective they were really nice ships as built, that at the time seemed wasted on NCL.

NCL could just keep her and market her as an expedition vessel and send her to Antarctica. She's ice classed, you know.

I am kidding.

She carries way too many passengers to operate to Antarctica, ice-classed or not.

I don't know where NORWEGIAN DREAM will eventually end up, but just today I received an email from NCL regarding a cruise in April. This truly must be a deal of a lifetime.

Departure: April 18, 2008
18 Nights.
South America and Panama Canal Cruise
Starting rate: $409 per person.

You read it correctly. $409 for 18 nights. Unbelievable.
You can upgrade to an outside cabin for $449.00 per person.

NORWEGIAN DREAM is actually one of my least favorite ships I've ever sailed, but for $409 I would suffer through it again!

Recently there is a rumour in Star Cruises saying that the Pride of ALOHA transfer will NOT occur indeed.

Mind that it is now less that 2 months before the supposed transfer, Star Cruises has not yet released any deployment plans for ALOHA.

Maybe rather than going to Star she will go to the NCL International fleet?

Wherever PRIDE OF ALOHA goes, she's supposed to be going in less than two months and nobody's announced a thing.

Odd.

If NCL is to transfer a 70000-ton ship to STAR, they should choose the SPIRIT and not the ALOHA. Why spend the extra money to convert ALOHA to Asian style and further convert SPIRIT, which is still very much Asian, to American style?

Here is NCL's comment regarding ALOHA:
"Pride of Aloha pioneered the new inter-island market but, as we move forward with Freestyle 2.0 to take our product to the next level across what is already the youngest fleet in the industry, we cannot justify further investment in this ship"

She is still quite young, so I don't really understand, why it is not justified for further investment on ALOHA but on MAJESTY?

I wish NCL to keep the DREAM or sell her to Louis. Her sister SuperStar Aquarius is a disaster in Asia. I just don't want to see the same nightmare to repeat on DREAM.

Andy - While I haven't been on either, my impression is that SPIRIT is considered a more modern/desirable ship than ALOHA, even though they are the same age. More balconies, bigger cabins, more alternative restaurants, faster (more itinerary flexibility), etc.

Star would probably rather have SPIRIT back, but I think NCL would rather get rid of ALOHA.

It's rather ironic, anyway - remember when SPIRIT was supposed to be the first NCL ship based in Hawaii, under the awful name NORWEGIAN LEO? NCL got STAR instead because it was cheaper to build her without a casino than convert LEO not to have one, or so we were told.

Now it wound up that two of the three ships built sans casino (STAR and PRIDE OF HAWAII) have had them added anyway, and indeed STAR had a casino added only to have a near-sister of herself (PRIDE OF HAWAII) built again without a casino to go to Hawaii, this time under the US flag... And an existing NCL ship (SKY/ALOHA) have her casino removed and then presumably added back! Crazy, isn't it ?

That's the point. In turn ALOHA is not fast enough (only 22 knots) for STAR on "destination cruises" to Halong Bay or Taiwan from Hong Kong.

I do wonder whether Asia has such strong market to welcome back a second yearround megaship, especially in winter. Look at LIBRA, she only had on average around 200 passengers on cruises ex-Hong Kong. Recently she is doing better as STAR is offering FREE oceanview cabins on all departures.

This is shocking to hear! Roughly, the combined capacity of the AQUARIUS and LIBRA is equal to that of the ex. SUPERSTAR LEO. Andy, when LEO was based in Hong Kong, did she sail nearly full?

I guess this will be a good test of the oft-repeated premise that cruise lines could still make money without charging fares...!

Remember, revenue from casino operations remains the major income for Star Cruises. Their casino are quite profitable indeed. Don't be surprised to hear that somebody loss HK$3 billion per night to Star Cruises. Do you believe that a Star Cruises ship can sail with only 2 passengers? Yet that has happened. So I can hardly believe this cruise line is losing money.

I'm not sure about the pax load of LEO a few years back. But as I said, most pax are not paying fare so the pax load can hardly tell anything about the "market".

For instance, PISCES had on average more than 90% pax sailing free. Now that she is free for all departures this month I bet less than 10 pax are paying $$ each cruise. By the way, Star Cruises is now giving out free cruises vouchers along the streets.

There is a strong rumour here that PRIDE OF ALOHA will not be transferred to Star Cruises since they are lacking crew (navigation officers indeed). They are running short of captains as they had to bring back a retired captain when they launched the AQUARIUS, and I heard that currently they still need one extra captain or bridge team for the current operations, not to mention to launch a new ship!
