Within the last hour, the former Carnival ship CELEBRATION sailed through the Straits of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean en route for Genoa, where she is due to arrive at 1330 the day after tomorrow. She is to undergo a refit to become GRAND CELEBRATION for Carnival's Spanish subsidiary Iberocruceros for Barcelona-based cruises.

I unfortunately missed seeing her, despite it being a gloriously clear day, as she is listed on AIS as "MS" CELEBRATION.

Just goes to show there is nothing to beat scanning the horizon with the naked eye, rather than be glued to a computer screen!!!

I agree with you Tony. A few years back with the former OLYMPIA EXPLORER sailed into Portland following the demise of ROC, she was listed as "EXPLORER."

Anyhow, how long will CELEBRATION's conversion take?

The website seems to suggest that Celebration will keep her funnel fins but then again so did P&O Australia's before Jubilee transferred but they were taken off during conversion.

I hope they don't butcher her funnel like P&O Aus. did with the ex JUBILEE. Anyhow I can't wait to see her after the conversion. Her deck plans suggests she will look drastically different.

A friend of mine who is Hotel Director on CELEBRATION just sent me this e-mail--I have edited it somewhat to protect the guilty --

"I just delivered the Celebration to the Genoa shipyard for its change of ownership. most of the public areas that we all remember were completely gutted on the way over, and will be redesigned for the European market. It will sail out of Barcelona most of the year and spend about 4 months sailing out of Brazil. The hotel directors cabin and the cruise directors cabin up on verandah deck fwd next to the suites (where we used to have some pretty decent parties, if I remember correctly!) are no more. They are being converted into mini suites. Thankfully the walls will not be able to talk as they are gone now too. When it is all finished it will be a totally different ship, but should look like brand new. And yes, the San Francisco trolley on the promenade was dismantled piece by piece and will be re-assembled elsewhere ..I think in a new Costa terminal building somewhere here in Italy.
I have the feeling that she will be just as successful in her second life as she was in her first.
All the best,
dd"

I have never sailed that class of ship. I have perused deck plans and photos of her and a well decorated interior and some minor interior reconfiguration [eliminating the Promenade deck pinch point, deliberate bar there to make people spend money, open the windowless bulkhead] would make them very liveable ships.

I've been on Celebration and, to be honest, her interiors were pretty ghastly,... the exception being Admiral's Library; I certainly hope they leave that alone. The room has models of Normandie, Mauretania, Olympic, and Bremen. It also has a dome of stained glass in the middle of the room that shows Queen Mary passing Normandie. All around the perimeter of the room are wonderful paintings of various liners.

But as much as I really didn't care for most of Celebration's interiors, they were light years better than Holiday's; she still ranks as one of the ugliest ships I've ever been on,...interior-wise that is.

I say leave the library on Celebration alone and, as far as the rest, start from scratch.

The Celebration being seen in Europe is a total, "Where am I" moment, for sure.

It's sad that all of the original ships that created the foundation for CCL today are now being handed over. Just the times, I suppose.

I'd still love to go on the Holiday at some point. I've never been on a smaller ship of CCL's than the Fantasy Class. I know that after being on CCL Freedom, Pride, Triumph, etc. I'd be in for an awakening on the Holiday but I enjoy both ends of the spectrum.

Steve,

I would sail the Holiday with trepidation, especially out of Mobile. It is probably better to fly to Spain and take the Celebration in its new form with passengers more understanding of people not like them.

Carnival Holiday out of Mobile Al

Here is a photo of the GRAND CELEBRATION from a few days ago, in her new Ibero Cruceros livery:GRAND CELEBATION

I will refrain from judgement, except to say that one of the silouettes looks just like those mud flaps that some truckers use in the US!

LOL.... I agree with you 100% and no I don't like it at all. Surprised that Carnival kept the original funnel.

I sailed on the Holiday in February and rather enjoyed the experience. This was designed as a quick getaway, so my expectations were not too terribly high. It is fine for short cruises and would definitely cruise on her again.

The IberoCruceros livery looks rather silly to me. It looks like people are falling off the ship into the ocean.

But I am happy they kept the funnel as is. PACIFIC SUN's funnel looks ridiculous with the wings unceremoniously amputated!

Looks like Celebration hasn't had the rather ugly duck-tail added that was added to Jubilee before it became Pacific Sun.

I assume this is because the Mediterranean waters more closely resemble the smooth waters of the Caribbean rather than the considerably more open waters of the Coral Sea that Pacific Sun has to haul through every week.

My impression of IC had been that it was slightly more upmarket than Pullmantur mainly based on its existing tonnage, however the new livery gives it away - Carnival Espana ! Like the funnel.

Have they added these dreadful figures to Mistral and Voyager ?

With a bit of luck someone might vomit over the side and cover them up. Please, they look like 1970's disco figures - hideous, and I very much doubt that a country as reknowned for design and art as the Spanish (with poss exception of Torrimalinos etc) would think these are stylish etc.

Here is a link to Carnival CD John Heald's blog aboard the GRAND CELEBRATION, complete with some photos: GRAND CELEBRATION.

I'm glad to see they've kept the original nautical theme to the library--not sure if those great liner models are still there.
