Can any one confirm that the ms Royal Star of African Safari Club, is no longer sailing? Supposedly she had shaft problem and also said to have lost one propeller. Due to her age and looming SOLAS she is not going to be repaired, instead ASC is looking for a replacement. I can not get any confirmation from ASC, they do not respond to mails.
thank you

Hi

One of the websites for the ship ' Royal Star ', run by Travelfest Ltd., UK., states that she is in dry-dock and having essential maintenance.

They state that she will not be sailing again until at least November 2008.

As ' Royal Star' is now 52 years old I would think the company could be looking for a newer ship to meet the Solas 2010 requirements if she has major mechanical problems.

Easycruise have said they are looking for a larger ship to replace Easycruise One.

It is possible Easycruise One could be suitable for the Royal Star cruises, after a re-fit, as at present she carries 210 passengers which is only ten more than the present Royal Star.

The older R ships are not really suitable for exposed waters which Royal Star has sailed. We have had several down this way and all suffer giving a VERY bumpy ride.

What a shame about RS though, she would make a lovely private yacht though.

Mike,
as you are located in Durban, the ms madagascar is still docked there. Friends tell me that royal Star people have been looking at her as a potential replacement. Any way you can confirm this? Does not really make sense as she is also not Solas 2010 compliant. At least she could repalce Royal Star in case the repairs can not be carried out as planned. According to same sources, the RS is indeed in drydock, but they say no work is being carried out as her owners ASC are contemplating various options.
have a good weekend

Let me tell you that Royal Star can give a bumpy ride. We sailed Mombasa to Cape Town a couple of years ago and coming out of the Mozambique Channel we had 36 hours of very rough seas - well rough on Royal Star!!!

Lovely cosy ship though - it will be a shame for her to go - but her hull was pretty beaten up.

Hi Locarno

Yes Madagascar continues to sit here although she is now sold - no news on her future but the Port Captain has stated he believes she will be sent to Alang. There was a rumour that she might be used in the Med for cruising for a season but that has not happened.

As a replacement for RS, somehow I don't think so, she is in poor condition and would need a very extensive refit before use, unlikely given she is not solas 2010 compliant.

Regards
Mike
