This morning saw the arrival of Ventura, QV & QM2.

As the sun rose, the storm clouds were already brewing...
...Here we have Ventura starting her "swing" in the Upper Swinging ground...

As Ventura "swung", QV was passing Dock head, and QM2 just passing Netley in the background...

The last chink of sun shone on Ventura's bow as clouds covered QV...

Hope the sun will shine on the departure this evening!
Brgds,
Andrew

That's a first picture of Ventura (the top one). Especially apt since, as the summer progresses, storm clouds do indeed seem to be brewing over Ventura.

Aaargh, my eyes - please no more photos of the blasted funnel !

Can we not just edit it out - altold Ventura is not the worst looker at sea but that funnel mesh thing is truely hideous and loathsome and an insult to all funnels everywhere.

Nice shots as always. I thought I might get used to the way Victoria looks with time, but it just strikes me as plain ugly. Time will tell if building a sister ship ( Elizabeth ) turns out to be a mistake.

Wow, that first ship looks awesome. It's always amazing what an angled sun can do to photos.

I have never seen Ventura before now and I've got to say that she is ugly. It looks like someone took a nice ship and pilled stuff on top. The front looks like they added a viking crown lounge and the back looks like it has a princess bride. That funnel is original though, but it's probably for a reason.

all P&O (carnival) has to do for the people that hate the funnel on the ventura is cover it with a huge piece of sheet metal and paint it the buff colour...ok...maybe make it a bit taller and oh well...get rid of the satallite ball's too...there...now she might look a bit better....jeff

I agree with you about the satallite domes. I remember when QE2 first had hers installed on top of the penthouses about 30 years ago. I thought it was a water-tower of some sort (ok, I was very young and had nevr seen one before) and I think she might have been the first cruise liner to have one. I think in some of the Cunard brochures at the time they airbrushed it out of the pictures of QE2 because it was so darn ugly. Now these domes seem to be all over the place on all the ships and the domes are getting bigger too! They look terrible, especially when they are not centered (see the above pic of Oceanic) and out of scale with the rest of the superstructure, masts and funnels. In my eyes they are destroying the looks of the ships. Like a big boil on the forehead of a beautiful woman....it's hard to overlook it. It just looks bad. But I guess satallite navigation systems, TV and Internet are all necessary now so they are not going to go away anytime soon. It would be nice however if someone could come up with a way of hiding them somehow into the design of the ship. I guess the Disney ships have come the closest to making them less obvious.

RCCL id a good job on the Voyager-Freedom class ships by making them look like golf balls on tees. Before I found out what they were I just thought that they were scenery for the mini golf course it blends in perfect.

Yes, i`m afraid to me the QV looks like a floating Dalek, which makes it all the more of a shame that the QE2 wont be with us much longer, she`s in a class of her own looks wise, some of the newbuilds do look nice though, i`m looking forward to seeing the Solstice, Oasis of the Seas and all those ones when they enter service, at least they have a bit of class about them, dont get me wrong , i have no doubt that QV is a great ship, but i`m convinced she would have to be the ugliest ship to wear the Cunard colours. I better take cover now, i can see some anger being steered my way

I agree that she is no great beauty externally. Not alltogether ugly, just average looking. Ok, let's face it, she's no Oceanic. Now her interior is a different story. Very warm looking and no doubt a very comfortable ship to cruise on. So are the days of the beautiful ships gone? Probably. Impressive ships will still be built but will they be truly beautiful? I grew up in the 70's and fell in love with ships like the Navarino, Oceanic, QE2, Rotterdam, the Sitmar twins, the original Royal Viking sisters, Song of Norway and her sisters, the NCL white-ships, Angelina Lauro, the old Europa, Festivale, the Princess "Love Boats" and my favorite, the Leonardo da Vinci.....All beautiful ships in my eyes. I would lay on my bed and stare at the brochure pictures for hours. Sadly it seems those days and those ships are just about gone. If there was book or a program about the history of beautiful ships I think that the final act, or the last chapter would take place in the last months of 2008, in a far away place called Dubai. As the curtain closes, or the last page is turned, the last beautiful ship we see is the Queen Elizabeth 2, and I guess that would be a fitting way to come to an end.

Yes, 2008 is a sad year for ship enthusiasts. The scrapping of Norway finally began, QE2 will be retired, Delta Queen very likely has her last season, Finnjet and Mermoz are scrapped.

But let's be a bit more optimistic since there ARE still some other beautiful (old) ships around.

You mentioned Oceanic - Regal Empress, Mona Lisa, Saga Rose, Royal Star (what is happening to her?) would also come to my mind, Ausonia is still in service (though not nearly as beautiful as she was) and of course many of the ships built in the 1970ies you mentioned are still in service. (at least for me QE2 is closer to the 1970ies cruise ships than to the older ships mentioned above)

Given that QV is generally considered a little ugly and out of sync with Cunards own liner philosophy, how will the similar Elizabeth fit in.
OK the Victoria may be wonderful inside, but externally it's barely worth photographing.
As I mentioned here on another thread, at a meeting of Cunard regular passengers on QM2 ( gold & platinum members , i.e big spenders and NOT just ship nuts ) there was a little booing and general sneering when the Victoria was mentioned by the captain.
So whilst Victoria may be able to hold its own, what is the point in having another just like her. I might be in the minority , but a nice interior will not outweigh an ugly exterior for me.

As Ernest mentioned above, there are still some beautiful (old) ships around. The thing is that they are just that......old. We don't seem to have any NEW ships being build anymore that are truly beautiful on the outside, not just the inside. If there were some new ships that I thought were beautiful then I would not miss the older ships so much I guess. It would not have cost a furtune to beautify the Vista design. I think several years ago Onno showed how tweaking the QV just a bit changed the whole look and the result was a beautiful ship. Sadly I don't see Cunard to be the company to come out with anymore beautiful ships. But who knows, maybe the new Disney twins will blow us all away when they come out in a few years. I guess if any company can pull it off it would be Disney.

Whereas I also would prefer QM2 for various reasons the 'only' principal difference between QV and QM2 is that QM2 is faster and larger - and not every Cunard ship was and has to be 'fast and large'. Both, QM2 and QV are modern cruise ships decorated following the 'liner theme'. I am not a fan of the style of QV either but she is at least fulfilling the cliche of a 'liner' many people expect which can not be said of the Cunard fleet of the past decades - and actually, tackiness is or was in a way typical for the decor of some liners. In this respect QV is actually an improvement making the fleet of Cunard far more consistent than it was during the past decades - Royal Viking Sun, Crown Jewel, the Sea Goddess ships, Cunard Princess and Cunard Countess, Cunard Ambassador, Cunard Adventurer were certainly less 'in sync with the liner philosophy' than QV.

Hey, I did not forget Saga Rose - how could I since she is amongst my favorites too. (we can discuss Ruby ) I also do not really like the idea that I can not get aboard anymore. It would be really, really nice to experience her once more before she has to go.

Thanks Andrew

When I've worked my way through them all in between everyday work shots I'll post an album on here. At the moment
I'm going through about 400 odd shots from the New york part of my trip. That was a shock- heavy camera bag and 91 degrees at 10pm!

Not all newbies are fugly, ok I know she is now 10 years old but the current Europa is I think very stylish externally, slightly top heavy over the bridge but a looker none the less. Then there is ..................ok that might be it actually but we do have at least 1 that is attractive. IMHO.

You can of course add the Disney twins which have beautiful design details. These two are also 10- years-old so there has been a dry spell for realy attractive ships.
