I just saw on Pullmantur's website that Sovereign will begin cruising Oceanic's current route "Mediterrenean Breezes" in March of 2009. Oceanic's last sailing on this route appears to be at the end of December 2008. From what I could see the website didn't seem to indicate Oceanic doing another route after that.

Does anyone here know anything more? Hopefully this doesn't mean the end of the line for another great old ship.

In my opinion when a ship gets to old age it should go to Alang or any other wrecker. Cars get old, planes get old and when cost of operations and repair get to a point, then it's time to retire them. Just remember the good memories!

Oceanic has been in service for 43.5 years. She has had a remarkable run, but it's probably time for her to go. Her aging steam plant must be getting very expensive to maintain and I shudder to think about her fuel costs.

Please tell me we are not going to have the same old "turn her into a hotel and dump her in some crummy port to rust away type campaign".

Wow! Big sigh of relief here. You guys had me really scared there for a moment. Guess I'll have to pay a visit to Valencia then!

Still, by 2010 it will almost certainly be end of the line for the wonderful OCEANIC

Thanks to all who replied. At more than 43 years old I'm sure her days are numbered, but she does still look great. Having not seen her in person for about eight years, her interiors do appear to be getting quite dated though; clearly a 1980s look. However, as stated above, she has had a great run.

Not to worry...no "save the ship" campaigns from me

Well thank goodness she is staying nd what a lovely option for those of us who want a short trip but don't fancy a whole week. The itinerary on the website doesn't quite match that shown above, and is in fact even more peculiar. See below.

ITINERARY A Friday to Sunday 2 nights / 3 days

Friday Valencia 14:00
Friday Ibiza 23:00 overnight on board
Saturday Ibiza dep. 06.00
Saturday Palma 12:00 overnight on board
Sunday Palma dep. 03.00
Sunday Valencia 14:00 end of the cruise

If that itinerary is correct it means you dock overnight in Ibiza and sail at 06:00 having arrived at 23:00 - those are some party people...

And the second part
Sunday Valencia embark
Monday Sea day
Tuesday Civit... Rome
Wednesday Ajaccio
Thursday Palma
Friday back to Valencia.

This itinerary is now shown thorughout the year. First part very cheap, from €169...

I'm all for repainting her in Home Lines colors. Just long enough to get some good photos, anyway. In my opinion that's when she looked her very best.

My info was a few months old so I believe this is more correct. The Ibiza stop seems odd.. And only April - Sep

I´ve heard that SOLAS 2010 wont be a problem for Oceanic - the big threat is her fuel consumtion.

If she is doing cruises to Spanish ports from a Spanish port with no foreign ports I assume the casino and shops are closed and duty is payable on all drinks etc ? ie: Valenica/Ibiza/Palma?Valencia ?
