From Cruise Business Review Online

25.9.2008: Fire hits Oasis of the Seas, 1,500 workers evacuated

A fire broke out on board Oasis of the Seas, the first in a series of two 225,000 gross ton cruise liners Royal Caribbean International (RCI) has on order at Aker Yards Finland. Some 1,500 workers that were on board the ship at the time the fire started at about midday on Thursday were evacuated. Insulation material on deck 9 caught fire in connection wityh welding work and the yard's own fire fighters were able to put it out before it could cause extensive damage, the Kauppalehti business daily reports on its website.

Although the were no casualties, the fire caused a lot of smoke, which spread from deck 9 to various decks higher up on the ship, the report said.

Insulation material?? One wonders?? Isn't insulation made out of glass fibres? What are the safety codes where these ships are built???
Hmmmm?

The fire was what could be called a "non event" it was nothing major in any way at all.

I recall a similar incident when Voyager of the Seas was being built at the same yard back in 1999. And who can forget the mess at Mitsubishi in Japan when Diamond Princess was half destroyed by a shipyard fire. Back in the 80s a similar event happened at Chantiers d'Atlantique with Monarch or Majesty of the Seas (I forget which one). Such fires are not that uncommon. The question is, how much damage and how much delay?

Chantiers d'Atlantique 1983 fire in the engine room switchboard of the Nieuw Amsterdam caused major delays.

Greetings Ben.

That may be the pre-inaugurals going up in flames. With the Voyager they had to sign the ship over incomplete and finish the work while on the transatlantic to Miami for the inaugural. It sounds small so it probably won't cause all to be canceled though. They will most likely just cut the number of destinations down to a few big ones like NYC, London, and Miami. If they get another fire though they may become in jeopardy of losing the inaugural. The pre-inaugurals usually only leave enough room for one fire before they miss the deadline.

It was a fire in a garbage can that was it...nothing else...nothing big..nothing major...a teeny weeny wee fire.

It wont cause any delays..it wont cost mega bucks to fix..it wont cause cancellation of Pre-Inaugurals.

It was nothing like the fire on VY.

The fire on voyager took place on a lower deck. This fire was on deck 9, so i'm sure the damage was far less extensive. Just glad to hear nobody was injured, thats the most important thing.

Pre-Inaugurals, what Pre-Inaugurals? I was speaking with Capt Remo and Julie Sherrington on Independence last week who both told me there will be no Pre-Inaugurals for Oasis due to build schedule. At best if they can get ahead of schedule they might do some in New York, but nothing in the UK

Yes it was basicly nothing dangerous. It was glad wrap catch fire, or lets say more like melting and causing a lot of smoke in air duct. Cause all packing material should be in some way fire resistant it actually didnt burned in flames. And air duct spread the smoke a litle wider.
No damage, no casualtys. Don't worry!

Most ships seem to have some sort of fire when under construction it seems.. just some make the news more than others.

From what I have read the only pre inaugural cruises will be out of Ft. Lauderdale. Vicki Freed has already stated that no cruises out of New York for the Oasis for pre Inaugurals.

That is correct Gordon.
As the Oasis will be go straight over the pond on 4th Nov, there will be no UK/Europe Pre-Inaugurals.
They will only be from FLL.

I wonder if Oasis can even fit under the bridge in New York? I was told the ship was so tall the Viking Crown Lounge will have to be installed after she leaves the shipyard...I wonder if that is still true?

Didn't someone suggest, maybe even RCI, that the reason for no NY pre-inaugurals was Central Park. Too cold there in December and a threat to the plants and trees. If that is the case, it is to be hoped there is never a need for the ship to sail in cold weather then!

She should be able to fit under the Verrazano seeing as she will have to fit under the Great Belt Bridge to leave the shipyard, and that has slightly less clearance.
