Have just been aboard Pullmantur's EMPRESS on her inaugural call to Gibraltar and heard that OCEANIC will spend her last season with Pullmantur sailing on five and two night cruises from Valencia next summer, displaced out of Barcelona by SOVEREIGN (ex "...OF THE SEAS).

Her last scheduled sailing is on 13 September, returning to Valencia on 18 September. She will be sold after that. Apparently, Quail Cruises want her, but because OCEANIC is so hugely successful in Spain, Pullmantur do not want her to go to any local competitor.

OCEANIC will have an extensive month-long drydocking here in Gibraltar in January, while EMPRESS will also be drydocked here next month.

Another bit of news is that next year, SKY WONDER (and not OCEAN DREAM as previously thought) will be based year-round on weekly Mexican Riviera cruises from Acapulco. She knows these waters well from her days as Sitmar's FAIRSKY.

Does anyone know for sure if OCEANIC is SOLAS 2010 compliant? If another line is interested in her after her Pullmatur duty, I would assume she is or can be made compliant fairly easily.

Perhaps the new Orient Line may be interested in Oceanic as they want a fleet of classic ships and have already bought one with steam turbines.

Hi Bob,
Perhaps Orient Line might buy/lease both Oceanic and Regal Empress to their fleet of ships. Would you consider asking them about this possibility? I'll ask them about it as well. It never hurts to ask about this suggestion.

Orient Lines is looking for a second ship to enter service in 2011 or 2012, from what I have been told.

With OCEANIC's steam plant and high fuel consumption, its hard to imagine who would want to operate her.

During our 2006 cruise on Oceanic, the captain assured us that she is Solas 2010 compliant.

I was told today that OCEANIC has been Pullmantur's proverbial "golden egg" and notwithstanding high operating costs, has always been profitable.

Yes, she is absolutely SOLAS 2010 compliant. I think some minor alterations were needed, but they have already been made.

Why should Orient Lines listen to him?

OCEANIC might work but REGAL EMPRESS... Never. Not least because she would cost a fortune to upgrade to be SOLAS compliant. And her accommodation is not remotely close to the standard needed by Orient Lines.

For a steamer her fuel consumption is quite good - not as good as a motorship of course, but far more efficient than even slightly older steamers.

OCEANIC should remain a commercially viable ship for a while longer, it would not be totally outside of the realm of possibility for her to reach 50 years in service (2015) though probably not likely IMO. Her accommodation is just as modern as many 1980s ships, she is reportedly in superb condition, fuel consumption is marginal but not too terrible and SOLAS is not an issue. In fact I am quite surprised that she may not outlive MAXIM GORKIY (though I haven't seen her fuel consumption figures).

Doug,

on my recent "Maxim Gorkiy" cruise (the sailing prior to the OLS cruise) I was told that at top speed, "Maxim Gorkiy" burns approx. 100 metric tons of fuel in 24 hours.

It was a pretty interesting sailing, by the way, as an Orient Lines delegation led by Wayne Heller and Bruce Nierenberg was aboard, as well.

Best,

Raoul

During my visit to the engine room of OCEANIC in June, I was told by the chief engineer that the ship burns 6.3 tons of fuel per hour at maximum speed, which today is limited to 20 knots at 100 rpm. That would give a daily fuel consumption of about 150 tons.

(The bridge officers, however, debated whether OCEANIC is actually able to reach 20 knots in her current configuration as she usually only reaches 18 knots.)

I believe all the nozzles are in place, but the engines are not run above 100 rpm. In the old days her maximum was 27 knots at 155 rpm - with the fuel consumption listed at 330 tons per day.

Orient Lines won't be in a position to even think of adding a second ship until mid-late 2009 after they've been able to see the reults of MP II's inaugural season and that would mean you would probably not see a second ship until 2010.

Regal Empress is totally unsuitable as she is far too old, outdated, doesn't have the standard of accomodations nor the provisioning and fuel capacity.

Oceanic would require far too extensive a refit and is for all intents and purposes too large. I believe Orient is looking to keep capacity under 1,000 pax per ship.

As for fuel consumption, most of MP II's itineraries in Europe were designed for a 12-15 knot cruising speed, so she should be fairly easy on fuel for a ship of her build and vintage.

Tim

That's quite efficient for a steamer. Of course that should not be surprising as she is one of the last three to ever be built (the other two being QE2 and FAIRSKY).

In that case she should do quite well in terms of fuel consumption on her new itineraries, which as Tim has already noted are geared for rather slow speeds.

Yes, I saw from Peter's blog that they were disembarking as the OLS group was embarking.

Perhaps it is just wishful thinking, but if the Oceanic was for sale at the same time Orient might be looking to add a second ship then it could very well end up being purchased. After all, Nierenberg probably knows the Oceanic and her capabilities better then anyone else. I do remember reading somewhere that he mentioned that Oceanic was his pride and joy. I'm sure Wayne Heller sold a butt-load of cruises on Oceanic when she was sailing for Premier and he was running Cruises Only in Orlando, so he too must be very familiar with her. We have all seen the Oceanic painted in red and white, so how about blue? Again, perhaps just wishful thinking.

Why would her engine output be limited like this? Is it dictated by the routes she sails or is it a matter of the equipment's age? Does this mean that the propulsion system is in a "tender" state or is the extra power simply not needed?

A slower speed leads to a lower fuel consumption which helps to make it possible to continue to operate a steam turbine ship although fuel prices have gone up.
