From another board it is said that she has been detained in Kusadasi October 18th and was ordered to sail for Izmir for repairs. Also, it is now speculated that the Japanese are fed up with her and are in negotiation to charter the NEW FLAMENCO. Any one can confirm these?

She is definitely in Izmir, see this thread. She is still showing on the port website. No idea about an alternative charter.

NEW FLAMENCO was renamed FLAMENCO I in August and has been anchored at Singapore for the last couple of months, since completing a charter as an accommodation ship in Papua New Guinea.

I would not be surprised if she is in a worse state than CLIPPER PACIFIC!

CLIPPER PACIFIC is reportedly in decent cosmetic condition but pretty much shot behind the scenes.

Apparently her previous Israeli owners pretty much let her go to you-know-what. And anyway she has got to be nearly twice the age she was designed to last.

The old Sun Princess is still one of my favorites.

If she found her way to Greece with Louis next year, I would be there!

At 38, she is up there in years, but still well within the projected lifespan of such a ship.

I wonder if she will be the first RCI ship headed for the scrap yard.

It is a shame since the Topaz was in excellent shape with plenty of life left in her. Goes to show how misguided rules SOLAS 2010 can ruin things. Fire hazard? how many have died in cruiseship/oceanliner fires in the past 50 years?

Hmmmm maybe Peaceboat could have had the Norwegian Dream

I really doubt when they were building this ship they expected her to last 38 years.

20 or 25 years is more like it.

Logically she should be, after all she was the first one.

Indeed, she is quite historic, the first vessel of a great cruise empire.

She was retired because she cost too much to run.

She didn't last long enough for SOLAS to kill her. That would have been in October 2010, her originally-planned retirement date.

She is not the only ship that people worried SOLAS would affect that has been or will be retired before it does - QE2 and SAGA ROSE would be prominent examples.

Actually, quite some people died in fires aboard ships during the past 50 years.
Beside that, regulations are of course not only based on ships.

No one builds a passenger ship for a projected 20-25 year life. There are many other cruise ships from her era that are still going, and the only one that comes to mind that was scrapped is Copenhagen / Odessa.

I would surmise the mechanical maladies with the Clipper Pacific have eclipsed the high fuel and manning costs of the Topaz.

RCI should purchase her and convert her into a floating hotel. Great for pre and post cruise stays....RCI Hotels

Sure, in fact the regulations coming into effect in 2010 are a direct result of the SCANDINAVIAN STAR disaster.

Sure, there are plenty still going, but that doesn't mean they were designed to last that long.

Even ships built now are only built with a 30-year design life (except QM2, which was built to last 40 years).

Well, they did keep the Viking Crown Lounge from this ship and her sister. Royal Caribbean is a sentimental company (not like Carnival). I don't see them going that far though.

Or they could use her as a tender for the Oasis or have her floating in one of her pools.

RCI still have the VCLs locked up? I am surprised they have not dumped them or integrate them in a newbuild....

They have ship scrapping facilities near to Izmir so Clipper Pacific will not have far to go !

I feel sorry for the elderly survivors of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki that are on board amongst a total of around 700 passengers.

I wonder if the heating / air conditioning etc is still operating on board as some parts of Turkey can be very cold in the winter.

The ship will also require fresh water and food supplies while she is tied up in Izmir !

The Peace Boat organization would have done far better to have kept chartering ' The Topaz ' and operated her on a slower schedule to cut her fuel consumption.

The New Flamenco has always seemed to keep to her schedules in recent years prior to the charter for use as an accommodation ship at Noumea.

She sailed back to Singapore for a refit, after the charter, where she was renamed Flamenco 1.

She has since been advertised for sale at US $ 25 million or for charter on a ships for sale website operated from New Zealand !

As she has in the past cruised round the world for CTC she should be ideal for the Peace Boat organization.

I recall a conversation with the captain during the 2004 visit that SOLAS was to do her in.

I guess PeaceBoat Organization did not perform proper due dillegence when surveying the Clipper before purchase.

Yes, it would have done her in, if operating costs hadn't done her in first.

Peace Boat only chartered the ship they did not buy her !

It would appear that repairs to her, which were carried out in Turkey and Malta, before her last trip when she was detained in the USA, could have rushed so she could start her charter on time.

Just for the update, Clipper Pacific was in Piraeus yesterday and she sailed to her next destination late at night. I wonder how they deal with the passengers being so late in the cruise program.
EDIT: The friend who told me that the ship left, may be wrong, as AIS shows it still in the port.

The Clipper Pacific Japanese Peace Boat remains tied up in Piraeus harbour today.

The voyage has been taken over by Mona Lisa which sailed today from Piraeus about 11.45 hrs GMT for Valletta where she will arrive on Saturday at about 06.30 hrs.

The original schedule was for the Clipper Pacific to have called at Valletta on the 11th October !

The remaining schedule for the Mona Lisa is not known although this Peace Boat voyage should have finished in Yokohama on the 18th December.

Their next voyage was due to depart on the 21st December and return to Yokohama on the 5th April 2009.

The first cruise for Mona Lisa, when she returns to her other charter, should depart on the 1st May 2009.

Having been tied up at the Main Passenger Terminal in Piraeus since 29 October, CLIPPER PACIFIC has sailed within the last hour (presumably without passengers), destination not known.
