OCEAN COUNTESS (ex CUNARD COUNTESS etc) is due to arrive in Valencia tomorrow. Having ended her summer season from Piraeus for Monarch Classic Cruises only a couple of weeks ago, it was assumed she, along with the other Piraeus-based ships, would be laid up for the winter in or near Piraeus.

What then is OC doing heading for Valencia? A charter to Quail or Vision perhaps? Personally, I would have thought it unlikely, given the state of the Spanish recession.

Anybody heard anything?

Tony

hi Tony,

i don't know if this helps you, but last week
i noticed she was on the Classic Int. Cruises
website as part of her fleet, she is also carrying the Portuguese flag, may-be this has been so for
many years, i was not aware of this..

regards
Joe

The Quail Cruises ship Pacific did have some engine problems earlier this year.

Perhaps they have chartered her while Pacific is sort out and repaired.

Hi Joe

OCEAN COUNTESS has been registered in Funchal, Madeira, since June 2005. CIC's other ships ARION, FUNCHAL, PRINCESS DANAE and OCEAN MONARCH are also all registered there too.

Hi Neil

I don't know what PACIFIC is doing this winter but she is not sailing for Brazil's CVC, nor as far as I can make out, is she operating for Quail, so probably will have a winter lay-up. Her last advertised cruise of thr season was on 13 October and she has been tied up at Valencia since 30th October.

It occurred to me OCEAN COUNTESS may be heading for drydocking in Valencia, as the tradition of Greeks repairing their own was broken last year when Louis sent both PERLA and ORIENT QUEEN to Marseille for winter refits. Pullmantur are sending both EMPRESS and OCEANIC here to Gibraltar, rather than drydock them in Barcelona, so assuming Valencia has a shipyard and drydock, this may be the reason, albeit it does sound rather implausible to send a ship right across the Med for that!

Tony

Hi there,

OCEAN COUNTESS and BLUE MONARCH are on the CIC-website already for a longer time because CIC is representing MIC in Portugal.
All MIC-vessels have the portugese flag already some time as well.
For the moment I don't know what will happen to the ship. A charter to one of these companies, probably Vision Cruises could be possible as their ship VISION STAR (CLIPPER JEWEL, ex SUPERSTAR GEMINI) is no longer featured on their website. Pictures and infos are replaced by pictures from ATHENA.

The Vision Cruises website still refers to VISION STAR and has a number of interior shots at http://www.visioncruceros.com/vision-cruises.php?id=90

Are these not of SUPERSTAR GEMINI then?

These pictures are not of a very good quality but it looks very much as pictures of ATHENA to me, especially the one of the pool which is definitely ATHENA.
But it could be that they do not yet have any new pictures of the CLIPPER JEWEL to be put on the net and are using those of ATHENA for the moment...

The photos are definitely not of SUPERSTAR GEMINI. Mike W RIP [Deck 9 001] has provided us with many photos over the years of her, see here. So very similar to BRAEMAR, before lengthening.

Am confused? BRAEMAR (before lengthening) and SUPERSTAR GEMINI are sisters.

As Athena is cruising from Fremantle in place of Funchal this year it could be that Ocean Countess will replace her on the Vision cruises

Is this programme going ahead as advertised? CIC Australia's website shows ATHENA departing Southampton for Fremantle on 11 November, yet she is currently berthed in Barcelona.

I've just spotted she departs from Nice (not Southampton) on 11 November.

Yes, I meant as sisters; that even though they had been apart and SG in the Far East much was still the same especially in the cabins. Only minor differences eg the Sports Bar ahead of the show lounge on SG and the Asian decor & Karaoke/bars areas on SG after her 2005 refit. Mike & I spent a while comparing them at one stage.

So the question still remains as to what ship's interiors are featured on the Vision website under the name VISION STAR?

Maybe Clipper would replace CLIPPER PACIFIC by SG/CLIPPER JEWEL on Peaceboat fleet...

And ATHENA is going on cruises from Cuba for Vision, and OCEAN COUNTESS replace her from Valencia for Vision...

The Classic International Cruises Australian website shows the ' Athena ' as sailing from Nice on the 11th November 2008.

After her Australian cruising season she will return to Harwich, UK, arriving there on the 3rd May 2009.

OCEAN COUNTESS has docked in Valencia next to PACIFIC. What intrigues me is that neither Quail nor Vision have a winter programme (apart from the latter's two Christmas and New Year cruises), so other than covering for ATHENA which had been earmarked to undertake those two sailings, what else could OC be doing?

Even if SUPERSTAR GEMINI was to go to Peaceboat, Vision's Cuba programme does not start till March.

Out of interest, is the Countess Solas 2010 compliant, she was the very first cruise ship I sailed on way back when and I have been thinking of reliving my childhood

Mystery surrounding OCEAN COUNTESS in Valencia is resolved!

She is about to begin a winter charter in Brazil for Spain's Travelplan and will be back in Piraeus in the spring. She was chartered by this same company for Med cruises during summer 2005.

OCEAN COUNTESS arrives here in Gibraltar in a few hours for bunkers en route to Brazil. What a shame she could not have been here on Friday when QE2 arrives on her final voyage to Dubai. It would have been interesting to see the small, former Cunarder, meet up with her big sister! I wonder how many times CUNARD COUNTESS actually met up with QE2?
