I just found this thread on another board and there are photos posted of the new balcony cabins that were added during dry dock. Not sure what to think.

Balconies at the stern look alright but the few at midship sure look strange.

It will be interesting to see how this update goes and whether Carnival roll it out across the class. Given the economic conditions I'g guess it will be a while before Carnival commit to the ongoing program.

I have never been a fan of the Fantasy Class, but for Carnival to tack on these balcony abominations... just dreadful. Looks like one of the Asian ferries where they simply build up and out.

They ruin what little aesthetics these ships have, look cheap... a bad afterthought.

IMO... the worst re-fit I've seen in a long time.

NCL must be happy... this botch job makes F3 look like a beauty!

I do not want to comment on how it looks ( ) but I have a question: The balconies are pretty low -> Is she now too wide for the Panama canal?

The aft facing balconies on the stern looks fine, but the balconies tacked on the side at the stern and mid-ship looks hideous.

The lowest deck of balconies is too low, and the mid-ship balconies look like after thought. Did Carnival hire a 5 years-old to tack some lLEGOS on the side of their ship?

Appears that no naval architect was engaged. They just hired some welders to tack 'em on one weekend.

If they work, maybe they'll weld a few more balconies onto the side... fore ... aft... attached to the funne... wherever they fit.

Perhpas they should slap a few small condos on the bow while they're at it.

The welding scorched area along the bow is a classy touch too.

Passengers boarding this cruise must have been glad they chose to sail a Carnival "luxury liner"

Great rendering Carlos. I wonder why Carnival just did'nt do 'French balconies' w/railings directly in front of glass doors. Those boxes amidships look like they are waiting for a wave to rip them right off the ship.

Great rendering Carlos, but don't give them more ideas... Next thing you know they will be ripping out the public rooms for more cabins, and maybe relocating the public rooms to the lower decks...

Like the look Carlos buit not possible unfortunately due to those high mounted lifeboats. Bit of a curse really; they have always made the Fantasy (and Holiday) class look slab-sided and now they mean the ships can't have many balconies whilst contemparies such as Princess' Sun class have heaps.

The location of the boats would'nt really matter but it is the placement of the main public rooms high in the superstructure. Newbuilds generally have the reverse deck layout w/cabins up top and principle public rooms down low

This looks awful.

And Bruce, the placement of the lifeboats does matter - how are they going to be lowered if there are balconies sticking out from the side of the ship below them?

Yes, that was the idea, stripping the ship's interior and partitions and relocating the public spaces to the lower decks and cabins in the upper decks. Might be impossible or not depending on many factors but the most important thing here would be the economics of doing this.

The boats will stick out more so than the balconies or the davits can fold down as they already do, the problem with this is that lifeboats when lowered for any reason (maintenance, drills, etc.) will be passing on front of the balcony cabins.

It is sad that the ship's exterior design was not taken into account. Same goes for NCL's EPIC.

This would be such an expensive change I think you might as well just move the boats lower down on the ship at that point.

After all, you would already be reversing the location of the cabins and the public rooms. Basically you would have to rebuild the whole ship from the hull up, why keep the lifeboats where they are in that case?

Anyway there is no way Carnival would spend that kind of money refitting these ships or any ships for that matter.

I think he has designed the exterior of every Carnival ship ever built.

Joe Farcus is not a decorator or stylist, he is an architect who designs the entire ship.

Sorry to disagree but I seem to remember that Stephen Payne was involved in the design of the Fantasy class (then the S class for HAL) and Farcus was absolutely an interior person. Sure I saw this in an interview with Mr Payne.

Just this looks very much like some of his interior schemes - bloddy awful.

Yes, they were both involved in the design of these ships. They have different jobs though.

Farcus is responsible for the exterior appearance of all the Carnival ships (for example I believe he designed the "signature" funnel). He also designs the interiors - everything from the overall layout of the ship to the smallest details of the decor.

I have read several Farcus interviews as well as career history. He takes care of the interior design and he designed the trademark funnel - but that's it. In this case I do like the new interior areas of the Fantasy-class ships (refurbished ones). Thumbs up for Farcus!

Now, as for the welded boxes, I feel disappointed. These Fantasy class ships have a lot of potential that is being wasted with these bad-taste additions, such as the one on the Carnival Liberty (Conquest class) suites over the bridge wings.

Keep in mind that the boats need to be able to be lowered with the ship listed at 25 degrees.

I meant from Carlos' rendering. The boats would still be high up followed by decks of Verandas (flush with hull) and finally the public rooms on the lower decks.
