She is creeping across the Tasman Sea to Auckland at 12 to 14 knots and calls at Napier and Wellington have been cancelled.
She will take four days instead of two days for the crossing !
She is said to have a problem with her port shaft thrust bearing and is expected to be in Auckland for at least two days for repairs to be carried out by engineers that are being flown out to meet the ship.

Meanwhile the reliable 40-year-old Maxim Gorkiy is on the beach and other reliable oldsters are being retired.
What is happening at P&O, Arcadia is going around the world with two shipping containers on its Sun Deck containing generators, Aurora has almost broken down in the Tasman - too bad if it were in the middle of the Pacific.
No matter how loyal you are to a company, you hate to see incidents like this that could have been avoided. Apparantly it happened before on Aurora last July or August on a Greenland/Iceland and Norway cruise and they did an on the run repair. I am willing to bet they did not pull the ship from service after that cruise for a few days to fully assess and service the ship.
Have QV's stabilisers been repaired yet?
Any problems with BW, QM2, Delphin Voyager, Delphin or any of the many other ships making their annual grand voyages? Just seems Aurora gets picked on sometimes. Even Vistamar made it to Durban the other day without incident [As accident prone as Mona Lisa perhaps?]

The generator on Arcadia's sun deck is in constant use. One of their own generators cant generate electricity (they wont say which one or what for) and there is another standby generator in a second shipping container next to it. There is a strong smell of fuel around it and every day engineers are up there doing things with it around the clock.
I am sure all of us who own cars get them taken off the road to be serviced, repaired etc. If something wrong develops with a ship it should be pulled from service. They should at least schedule maintenance periods in throughout the year to keep it operational as these incidental expenses would have to be costing them allot more money than it would cost to maintain them properly. The name Carnival is not held in very high esteem amongst allot of passengers and you can see why.

Weather reports for the Tasman crossing are not promising.
One year it would be for 9 days and the following year for 14 days !
She could still cruise at 27.5 knots with no problems.
It was the increases in the cost of oil that led to her being withdrawn from service in March 1986, even though she was advertised in the P & O Australian brochures to undertake some more cruises.
Being on the ship at that time, I have a copy of the brochure !
They have backed her into Queens Wharf so the cam is looking over to Stanley Point on the North Shore.

They've been told it'll be a minimum of 3 days before the ship will be repaired!!!!

Can a break down like this be prevented with servicing and does this part have an operational life where it should be replaced from time to time?
It would be nice to see more information about it.
I am still hoping someone can answer my first question.
There is also the ones in Brisbane or Newcastle, Australia, which are used for the P & O Australia ships.
The other choice would seem to be Singapore or she could become a new island in the South Pacific !!

We could incorporate her into a new port redevelopment scheme...a ready made hotel.
So the news has broken.Even if it is just retailers rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of 2,00 extra shoppers in the city.I have been watching for any reports ever since this whole thing started.I dont think the media realise just what is going on yet. Wait till they start talking to the passengersThe story should be picked up now and the media will start asking curly questions.....especially if she is delayed any longer.Does any one know how far across the Pacific she could get without refuelling?I heard they have cancelled Tahiti, and that only leaves Hawaii,and SanFrancisco before she is booked to go through the Panama Canal.I would have thought she would have to stop in Hawaii to top up the tanks.
It would be a poor choice just to speed across the Pacific to make up time and get to San Francisco on schedule. Why not stick to the itinerary and arrive in each port late. They will have to cancell the following cruise but wouldnt that be easier than trying to calculate what compensation the passengers on Aurora are entitled to?
I would think that if they stuck to the itinerary and the passengers ended up with a longer cruise then they would not be asking for any compensation. It would be simpler just to refund the passengers on the following cruise and add a short party cruise to fill in the gap when it arrives back in Southampton.

Good idea,but it starts to get complicated as they would have to compensate passengers on the following cruise.My understanding,and I stand to be corrected here, is that they have to pay up front for the booking at a port of call, whether they use it or not,so that the berth can be held for them. They will also be booked in for the canal transit and if they miss that they will have to join the queue.Latest from a passenger is that it wont be until at least Tuesday night now,but the Captain will not commit to a deparure time.
