She is actually in Instabul under refit...

With the Japanese Peace Movement now going to use the ex Pullmantur cruises ship Oceanic it would appear that the Clipper Pacific will not be doing the next charter voyage for the Japanese group.

After her massive problems while on charter to the Japanese group last year, I can not see that any company would charter her again.

Mediterranean Classic Cruises does appear to have the Classic International Cruises flag ship Athena doing most of their seven day cruises.

There is also a link on the website saying that the Vision Star will not be ready in time to start cruising in March as expected.

Work seem to be progressing slowly on the exterior. Does anyone know what work is/will be done on the inside?

Announcement From MCC :

M/V Vision Star

The Chairman and Director of “Visions Cruises Caribe Inc.”, Mr. Dennis Nuza, has informed us that due to the delay and resulting non-availability of the vessel “VISION STAR”, the first cruises commencing in March 2009 have been cancelled until further notice.

“Visions Cruises Caribe Inc.” regrets this unexpected turn of events and is using its best efforts to offer alternative arrangements.

Intrigued to see (via AIS) that CLIPPER PACIFIC and VISION STAR are both docked along the same dock at Istanbul's Galata Passenger Terminal.

So it appears the sub-charter to Mediterranean Classic Cruises has collapsed, which is why ATHENA has replaced VISION STAR on their website. (SUPERSTAR) GEMINI seems to be getting around rather a lot (of charterers) without actually sailing anywhere! GEMINI is probably replacing PACIFIC, still undergoing repairs at Genoa. Also what of OCEAN COUNTESS that is sailing through the Straits of Gibraltar from Brazil as I type this and heading for Valencia?

This good news indeed and a lovely vessel for them. A nice brochure on their website and they seem to be sailing from 30th March with good pricing. [Shame about all the old Pacific info everywhere on their site including offers and itineraries etc. Most confusing for anyone not having a clue what has been going on].

Wish them luck, I am sure she will be a popular ship. I would love to compare her in person to the pre-stretch Braemar.

Pam

Oh that does look nice, the wife and I have been wanting to do a "Spanish cruise", but Pullmantur really isn't floating our boat (sorry for the pun) I will have to contact my TA, see what the rates are like.

The AIS maps tonight are showing Vision Star on her way from Istanbul to Valencia at 15.4 knots.

She is shown as arriving in Valencia at 09.00 hrs on the 27th March 2009.

She appears to be still registered as Vision Star, according to the AIS maps, so perhaps the change of name to Gemini will only be while she is on charter to Quail Cruises.

Ocean Countess arrived back at Valencia today having been on charter to Quail cruises due to their ship mv Pacific being out of service.

Ocean Countess has been used for the Quail winter cruises in the South America area and is now shown as returning to Piraeus where she will arrive about 20.00 hrs on the 29th March.

Having cruised for what was Monarch Classic cruises last year ( now re-named Mediterranean Classic cruises ) she is not at present shown as sailing for the re-named company this year.

Having been built as Cunard Countess in 1976 and used in the Falklands conflict as a troop ship during 1982 / 1983 she left the Cunard fleet in 1997.

It is not known if she has been updated to the Solas 2010 requirements.

Quail Cruises has announced that "Gemini" will be operated through May, 2009 only. "Pacific" is to resume service after that.

She was built in 1976 (i.e. built to SOLAS 74), so why do you think she could not be compliant?

Best,

Raoul

Technically she could have been built to SOLAS 60. SOLAS 74 didn't come into force until 1980.

In reality, virtually all ships built by this time are compliant (including this one). I cannot think of a 1970s-built (even pre-1974) cruise ship that isn't.

The last milestone for these ships was requiring sprinklers and that happened in 2005 so if they're still around they're OK for the foreseeable future.

I guess she needs to have new enclosed lifeboats installed, though.

Best,

Raoul

Enclosed lifeboats? Is that a rule now for existing ships?

This one is new to me ... must be great if you're in the lifeboat business!
