I have gotten a number of e-mails lately asking me if I know anything about AEGEAN I, which Gerry Herrod has bought.

I do not know anything more than is public knowledge but for those who are interested, here are some very recent photos of her undergoing conversion:

Although these photos are said to be recent, they appear to date back to the conversion work carried out on the ship before she made her first cruises as ' Aegean Dolphin ' in 1988 !

Must have been an early Nikon D40X back then.

Take another (closer) look. Those are recent images as seen w/the newly installed full length glass windscreens above the boats. Those windscreens were'nt there last year. Those new screens make her funnel now look a bit stubby. IMO it would look much better w/a 15-20' extension.

So they are apparently adding balconies on two decks near the stern.

Neil,

These shots are recent. A lot of of what is happening is renewal of existing steelwork, plus some small changes as described by some others here.

The photos are recent.
Just the work on the vessel is not that intensive.

Not going to win prizes for the prettiest ship.

I am not sure about this project, he has already stated that she is to be an (other) expedition type ship, well we have quite of few of those and the market is tight as well.

And I would not be surprised if the Antartic lot come along soon and ban all non ice rated ships.

Lets hope her interiors are gems. He did a great job with Discovery but alot of it was already there, this appears to be a total strip out ?

Cut her some slack, she was originally built as a ro-ro in Romania! :-)

Here is one of her sisters:

not bad looking for a ro-ro by the way!

Maybe not, but as a matter of interest, her owner, Captain Anargiros Angelopoulos based her external design on Hapag-Lloyd's 1981 EUROPA (now BLEU DE FRANCE) which he greatly admired.

The man had good taste.

I do not think AEGEAN I is a bad-looking ship. Not pretty, but certainly not ugly either. She is probably better-looking than most of the cruise ships out there at this point...!

I actually don't think she is that bad looking at all and in fact better looking than most newbuilds coming online. I mentioned a taller funnels because the new windscreens block it and from her profile pic, it looks a little stubby

I hope they manage to restore her back to the impressive little Aegean-Dolphin cruiser that I sailed in 1995. In fact, I jumped at the chance to sail on the ex Europa in 2007 when she was sailing as Pullmantur's Holiday Dream just so I could compare them. It would be nice to sail her again to see the upgrades RCCL did for her switch to CDF.

It would be kind of difficult for someone to take photos in 1988 with a camera that wasn't even introduced until 2007. Unless they had a TARDIS

The point of all the camera posts is that the photos can't have been taken when she was being converted originally because the camera they were taken with didn't exist for another decade.

I was not asking about the photos, I was asking Brian O about a camera that was mentioned.

I do not see the point in your reply unless you are able to answer the question about the camera !

As I said I am not familiar with this camera. !

For all I know it could be like a Kodak brownie box camera !

It makes no difference whether one is familiar with the camera used or any particular make of camera. The point is, it is a digital image, with an EXIF file and no such digital cameras were in existence in 1988 as shown by Doug's link. Wonder whoever had one of those.

It would however have saved a lot of grief & time doing a quick Google on Nikon D40X.

Let's keep this simple.

You stated that you thought the photos dated from 1988. However, it is clearly indicated on the site that the photos were taken with a Nikon D40X. That camera is an entry level 10 Megapixel Digital SLR that was introduced by Nikon in 2007 as a cheaper altenative to the 10 Megapixel Nikon D80. (Nikon also introduced the 6 MP D40 at the same time as the D40X.)

How do I know the vintage of the D40x? Simple. In early 2007 Frosty4 was weighing the pros and cons of buying either a Nikon D80 or the "soon to be released" D40X in CT's Midship Lounge and I partcipated in that thread. At the time retailers were only taking pre-orders for the D40X because it was not yet available.

Now, unless you have a time machine (e.g. Doctor Who's TARDIS) it would be impossible to use a 2007 vintage camera, of any make, in 1988. Therefore the photos could not possibly have been taken in 1988, so your conclusion is in error. And that has been the point of all of the camera posts from Pam, Doug and I. You seem to be the only one who is confused.

If you really want to find out more about the D40X, a short visit by you to the Nikon web site should answer all your questions

Brian

A re-check of what I wrote only said that they appeared to date back to 1988.

It was not said that they were taken in 1988 !

It seems some on here just love to start an arguement !

Neil!

I don't even know what your question about the camera was! You don't seem to have asked anything very specific! All you asked was to be "enlightened!" If you really didn't want anyone other than Brian to reply, then what you wanted was a private message, not a discussion board post!

And if you really want to know what a Nikon D40x is, I have heard they have recently invented this wonderful thing! It's called Google and you can type in "nikon d40x" there and you will get more information than you could possibly want! Maybe you should try it some time!

This is the point of mentioning the camera! It proved that the photos could not have been taken in 1988 or earlier as they "appeared to" to you! (Anyway, they should have not appeared that way! There are many obvious differences between the ship in those photos and the way she was when originally converted! For one thing, she was not called AEGEAN I then!) If you wanted to know something about the camera other than what was relevant to this discussion, you should have been a little clearer! I just assumed that you wanted to be "enlightened" about something that actually had something to do with what we are talking about! I guess I shouldn't have!

If you don't see the point of my post, well, I'm sorry! I was not aware everything I posted here had to pass the "Does Neil Whitmore see the point of this?" test! In the future I shall continue to post whatever I like! If you don't see the point, I guess you'll just have to get over it!
