Who would have thought 60-years ago that there would be a new Nieuw Amsterdam and Queen Elizabeth in the early 21st Century and they would basically be the same ship?

No one But who thought 60 years onward both lines became American owned sister lines. I think the boards of Directors of both HAL and Cunard would found it a good joke/nightmare.

Ironical is that some found the Queen Elizabeth (1) the larger sister of the Nieuw Amsterdam (2) they shared similar design elements (so I read).

Greetings Ben.

Hi Ben,

Was this the keel-laying at the Marghera yard? From an Italian website (www.naviearmatori.net) I have learned that part of the ship was already being built at the Sestri yard near Genoa (where they built the COSTA FORTUNA/MAGICA/CONCORDIA/etc.)
That part will then be moved to Marghera, to join the rest of the ship.

Yes, the forward section of the NA was being built in Sestri. I have pictures of her occupying the building dock that was needed for Marina and they were late getting the NA floated out.

They shared that classic twin-funnel profile which is one of my favorites. NA had those magnificent interiors and her 1st class main lounge as built was about as good as it gets. It was super high-style Moderne at it's best.
As for QE, I preferred her perfectly proportioned profile but other than her 1st class main lounge, library and main hall, I was'nt crazy about her interiors.

Ben,

Another change: QUEEN ELIZABETH is being built in Monfalcone! :-)

It used to be so simple: Vista's from Marghera, Costa ships from Sestri and anything else from Monfalcone, but not anymore! :-)

Am I the only one who thinks the name NIEUW AMSTERDAM will cause marketing & sales confusion with the current AMSTERDAM? It would also imply that the AMSTERDAM is the "old" ship, which she sorta kinda is, but not terribly so. I wonder if there may be plans afoot to re-deploy that vessel elsewhere, with a different name.

Linerrich....that thought has crossed my mind too. I have heard no rumors about deploying Amsterdam else where, but these days stranger things have happened. I know she's not as well liked as Rotterdam VI, but she's still a very nice, comfortably sized vessel, and liked by many. It will be interesting to see just how this will all work out. Travel agents beware! Confusion is in the forecast!

No you are not the only one thinking that there will be confusion and TA's and paxs have to be aware of this.

Confusion reigned when they brought out the Amsterdam in 2000 and still had the NA in the fleet.
NA left the fleet in 2000 and AMDM was launched in 2000, but I think, not sure, that the NA was still sailing when the AMDM was launched. Paxs and TAs didn't know which ship they were booking.

NA was sold to USL before the Adam was introduced. After the USL went bankrupt and the Patriot returned to HAL as NA, there was some rumors that she was to return to HAL cruising. But that never happened. It was the only time the Nw Adam and Adam name together in the HAL fleet.

Diane there is some confusion among others on other boards. And mostly I have answer on HAL stuff but this time not. To be honest about the Adam and Nw Adam names I'm a confused what will happen. I personally think that the Adam will renamed, and hoping they will give here the name Potsdam. But that is my wish and not a fact. There is a small chance that the Prinsendam will leave the fleet and that she will take over the Prinsendam name, but I doubt that. Other possibility's to keep the name in the fleet and give the Adam a new home market such as Asia, Australia.

We must wait what HAL in there wish dome have decided.

Greetings Ben.

They may of course simply give AMSTERDAM another name. P&O changed the name of the very popular SEA PRINCESS to VICTORIA, to make the name available for one of their Princess cousins.

It would be a very expensive exercise to rename Amsterdam just because knowing they already had Amsterdam they decided to name the new ship NA.

Not very Carnival who hate waste of any sort. Especially waste caused by themselves for no reason.

So either they chose to name the new ship NA whilst keeping the existing Amsterdam as Amsterdam and to hell with the confusion or they already have alternative plans to sell Amsterdam or redeploy her to another Carnival brand. Personally I suspect they will simply keep her as Amsterdam - if she is to move the only real place she could go is P&O - paint her white, buff the funnel, give her a new name and presto no internal refits, no nothing needed, their fleet is now such a hodge podge of designs almost any ship would fit in quite nicely. Probably not long before they get a Farcus design.

New pictures from the Nieuw Amsterdam.

The whole bow section is already build and towed to Venice. A new way of building ships at Fincantiëre. The Eurodam was build completely at the Venice yard.

More here HAL Blog, Nieuw Amsterdam Blog

Good to see the name back on a bow.

Greetings Ben.

Tim according to news page of Fincantiere it's the Costa Luminoza, she's to delivered at the end of April. The Costa Luminoza, is visible in the first picture you cane see here bow tip. She have first floated in drydoch March 12.

quote:
The Costa Deliziosa will be the third new Costa ship delivered by the Fincantieri yards in less than one year. The Costa Luminosa, also built in Marghera, will be delivered at the end of April 2009, while the Costa Pacifica, built in the Genova-Sestri Ponente yards, will be delivered at the end of May 2009. An extraordinary and record-breaking event will be held in Genoa, on 5th June 2009 when, for the first time ever, two ships, the Costa Luminosa and the Costa Pacifica, will be christened at the same time. The official technical sea trials of the 2 ships were successfully completed just a few days ago, confirming the operating efficiency of the systems, equipment and engines. The tests were conducted during the first crossing of the Costa Luminosa and the Costa Pacifica.

Fore the rest of the news massegesFore the rest of this story look here.

Greetings Ben.

Ben,

I can tell you with absolute certainty, that is NOT the Luminosa. When the NA bow section was towed in, the Luminosa already had her lifeboats, all the glass had been installed, cleaned and shined and she had a full coat of paint.

The ship in the picture is clearly not ready to go to sea and Luminosa has already completed her first set of trials.

That is the Deliziosa.

Tim no it's not NO JUST KIDDING, you are right. Then the question of the bow tip visible on the edge of the picture is it possible that she's the Luminosa?
