On the 6th of April 1995 Oriana was named in Southampton by HRH Queen Elizabeth the Second.
Was it really 14 years ago??!!
Here are a few photos from earlier today:-

I remember thinking - 14 years ago - that she was boxy and angular. Now - how marvellous does she look. She's truly got character and represents a nice medium between form and function.

Happy Birthday Oriana.

Wow, 14 years ago does seem like a long time. I was 9 years old then. She was a very large ship back then! Happy Birthday Big O!

A lot has certainly changed at P&O and in the British cruise industry in those 14 years. The legend on that lovely menu Pam posted, "The Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company," is itself an indication that it was a different time...!

Fortunately ORIANA is still in service and still pretty much unchanged from her original form, and I hope that is still the case in another 14 years. And hopefully by then I will have sailed in her.

In 1995 I was a seven-year-old ship nut. I got my information on ships from books, magazines, newspapers etc.! ORIANA obviously not promoted in the US but there was a review of her in Porthole (before it changed to a "lifestyle" magazine), of which she was on the cover, and WOW! I thought she was the most beautiful new ship I'd ever seen. I still think she is one of the most beautiful ships in the world and, well, "They don't build them like this any more!"

Wow, after 14 years, ORIANA's design is still modern. I can't believe she is already 14 years old!

I was only 14 when I saw Oriana for the first time in 1996 on its Maiden World Voyage in Sydney. 18th February 1996 it was a Sunday and the ship arrived late as it had to sail around a massive storm in the Tasman on its way from New Zealand. I still have the brochure of the Maiden World Voyage.

To me it was a beautifull ship to look at back then.

It is amazing to think it was designed and entered service at the same time as the Sun Princess, Oriana is far more beautifull, has larger cabins, has the spectacular terrace decks, the pool and spa area is larger on Oriana. Oriana is even the same length, width, and height in decks as the Sun Princess and has a heavier deadweight, but Sun Princess ends up with 77,000 gross tons and Oriana 69,000 gross tons. When you look at both ships today Oriana appears in much better condition.

In comparisson Carnival Destiny entered service in 1996, Century and Galaxy 1995 and 1996, Crystal Symphony 1995 as well as Legend of the Seas and Grandeur of the Seas.

Actually here are some of my photos of Oriana on its Maiden visit to Sydney. That was the year I started my photography of ships in Sydney.

And finally one my Grandfather took from a Sydney ferry, I was at Circular Quay.

Channel 4, (in the UK) came out with a brilliant four part documentary series in 1998/9, called 'The Liners', based on a book by Rob McAuley. It features interviews with Bill Miller, John Maxtone-Graham, Frank Braynard, Joe Farcus, Micky Arison & many others.

I taped it from the TV at the time & I watch it often (I have just watched it yet again). At the time, the Oriana was one of the newest cruise ships & features in the series. There is footage of her in the Suez Canal & in Sydney on her maiden voyage.

The Carnival Destiny also features, as the first passenger ship to exceed the size of the Queen Elizabeth & also to exceed 100,000 tons. On my recent Regal Empress trip, we came into Nassau along with Carnival Destiny. I am sure that her historical importance was as lost on most of those present, as was that of Regal Empress!

Graham.

What a nonsense
We were on the maiden voyage from Auckland to Sydney.
It was a stage managed event on behalf of P&O.
We actualy waited outside the heads until the helicopters and the TV cams were ready for us to enter the harbour, and then on demand, the ship made its entrance, welcomed by a swarm of small boats.
Excellent marketing by P&O.

Has anyone seen drawings of how ORIANA will look with her new built up stern? What will be the new capacity? It has been described as a similar stern to EURODAM.

It would look awful. Imagine a box attached to her aft section and a huge ducktail below to support it. Not a pretty sight!

If she doesn't get the stern, she will get the verandah's, she is the perfect candidate for that facelift.

Well 13 years is a long time to remember details, but it was originally scheduled to come in early. I still have the brochure and all news reports in the lead up to its arrival kept indicating it would be arriving late. The weather was foul here the week before it came and finally on the Sunday it was a great day.

It doesnt matter why it was late to me because it was good to have the ship come in to Sydney at the time it did and see it come through the harbour and dock in day light.

Also from its cruise schedule next year there is an 84 day gap between cruises and one cruise number missing from its schedule. P&O have something planned for it. Its not stern cabins as plenty of people have been told already that the ship was not designed to handle that kind of weight. It better not be side balcony cabins added.

From what I gather, the plans are to add two decks on the top, and to add cabins at the stern which will be balcony cabins. With her added decks and stern cabins, she will have more balconies than Aurora until she gets her "rear" done. Hope both done with some design sense.

Yes it was excellent. You can sometimes find it on UK DVD (2 seperate discs, four episodes) via Amazon etc.

With regards to the 84 day gap in Oriana's itinerary next year it may be an extra cruise that they have not announced. A few years ago Artemis did a voyage around South America close to that time period. It seems unlikely it would go in for a refit so soon after the one it had in 2006.

IF and I mean IF it did go into a refit I would put money on balcony cabins being added. That is all I would be prepared to bet on at this stage.

This sounds like an absolute disaster.

Frankly it doesn't sound likely to me - I can almost believe building up the stern but adding two decks to the ship?

Can she possibly have the deadweight capacity to absorb changes like this?

I certainly hope this is not true, I can deal with "clip-on balconies" but it sounds like they are going to really murder the ship.

Before we know it we are going to wind up with another one of these! (It used to look like this!)

But really, I think P&O ought to tread lightly on what it does with this ship ... as far as I know she has a very, very loyal following. I'm not sure how kindly they'd take to massive changes.

Oh, for the days when shipowners were like the old HAL, and kept a ship for 38 years without changing anything. (OK, almost anything.)

Building up the stern is also ruled out because the ship cannot take the extra weight. This came directly from David Dingle when he was on Artemis and it was brought up. They had thought about building up Artemis stern like Arcadia but when they sat down to plan it they figured out that the ship would no longer float. He said it was the same for Aurora and Oriana.

i think balconies wouldn't be such a bad thing, hull hole ones maybe or those ones that aren't quite, like on the seabourne ships, and besides he is quite right, look at the numbering: 3rd September 20 nights 'X016', 17th December... 'X018' say - 80 odd days... sounds like a world cruise?

Apparantly Cruise Kings in the UK are sending out emails that Aurora is scheduled to have a major refit after its world cruise in 2010. There is a 3 or 4 week gap for it to happen. No mention on Oriana.

In 2005 around that time Artemis did a Grand Voyage of that similar length around Soth America across the Pacific, NZ, Australia and back through the Panama. Maybe an early long voyage.

When you look carefully there is one consecutive cruise number in Oriana's itineary missing.
