Mediterranean Classic Cruises are without a ship of their own at present.

Van Gogh had been laid up with some maintenance crew on board in the Piraeus area.

Over the last two days it has been announced that she was purchased by Cyprus Salamis Lines for $7.5m.

Stock Exchange Announcement:
Salamis Tours (Holdings) Public Ltd announces that it has proceeded with the purchase of cruise ship Van Gogh against the sum of $7,500,000. The finance stems from the existing cash available of the Group and no new loans will be raised.

The new modern cruise ship will replace Salamis Glory in the future and will improve significantly the cruise product offered, upgrading the tourist product of Cyprus.

Van Gogh has nine decks, is of 15,400 tons, a length of 157 meters and width of 22 meters. It was constructed in Finland in 1975 and reconstructed in 1999. It may host up to 800 passengers in luxury suites and spacious cabins of various categories. All cabins are above the sea level and most of them are external and have all modern facilities.

The public spaces include spacious saloons, five bars, disco, amphitheatric cinema of 140 seats suitable for conferences too, swimming pool for adults and children, a big casino, duty free shops, gym, sauna and playground. The open decks are ideal for relaxing walks and sport sand leisure activities.

The Company intends to register the ship in the Cypriot register of ships.

Calling Van Gogh modern really needs a degree of imagination...on the other hand it is about 12 years younger than Salamis Glory

Well, I don't think anyone can complain about that name not being unique! Definately one of a kind! At least it was not Salamis Dream. That would have started yet another debate.

Van Gogh has moved from her lay up berth at Elefsina, where she had been since December 2008, to the ship repair area at Drapetsona.

She started the trip with what appeared to be some steering tests before anchoring for the night and then proceeded the next morning to the ship repair yard at five knots.

There is a photo of her here [click for larger image], with a rather hastily scrawled name she's in good company anyway for however many months she will be there.

Hi Pam

Thanks for the news.

Just wanted to add that Filoxenia (Φιλοξενία is the Greek word for hospitality.
