Well I think we all like to design cruise ships in our minds, trying to make the perfect ship. So I decided to try and use photoship to actualize my vision in pixels. Of course, with my obsession with Bermuda, I made my ship in Furness's livery, but also because I am tired of purely white and blue cruise ships. My new "Ocean Monarch" is about 770 feet long, and is obviously based on the Disney Magic / Wonder twins, though I gave her a "stronger" bow, a little less swoopy. Since she is much shorter she only has a single reshapped stack. I also added a few more balconies for her size, and changed the masts to be a little more traditional, and not so stylized. So a modern cruise ship, with some lovely memories of the past.

Here are the Furness "fleetmates" from another era first, the Queen of Bermuda and Ocean Monarch

And of course my "inspiration" or downright source, the Disney Magic

and finally my Ocean Monarch....

Does anyone else have their designs they would love to share? Please feel free to give your comments / criticisms on my design...

Thad and Tom, I like what both of you have done!

Just for fun I have been working on one design for about 2 years now. My dream ship!HERE. This picture is about a year old so it is slightly out of date (the design is now slightly longer and the height is different). I am currently working on a much more acurate and detailed picture.

It has taken me a long time as I have been trying to design this ship both inside and out. I have been trying to do everything from Hull shape, crew area and passenger area layouts, interior design (very art deco), to lots of different technical details. Someday I will post more pictures.

So far I can tell you she will...
-be larger then Oasis (this was actually by accident).
-Be very art deco, she is influenced by the Queen Mary, Normandie, Bremen, QM2 and lots of other ships and land based art deco buildings
-have a wrap around enclosed promenade deck as well as a wrap around out door promenade deck.
-have a lot of out door deck space.
-have 2 large main dining rooms as well as many other smaller resturaunts and bars.
-have lots of lounge spaces.
-have many entertainment venues.
-have at least 5 pools.
-have cabins much larger then the rest of the industry as well as many different cabin catagories.
-have a large passenger space ratio as the ship will carry much less people then the design is capable of.

Someday I hope to design cruise ships for a living. Although I haven't taken classes for it yet (I am doing this design just off of what I already know about ships and a lot of research) I am doing this just for fun and as a way to learn about ships and ship design.

Let me know what you think! HERE!

I like it, but I would be very interested in the latest version! Some extra length and less height would certainly do your ship good. Right now it reminds me a bit of the L'ATLANTIQUE of the 30s (that one that burned after only a few years).
I also see a bit of HANSEATIC (the ex-CP ship).

So, very Art Deco indeed!

Brgds.

I really love your design, looks much better than the Norwegian Epic A bit more length would make her look even better!

Here are some of mine:

This is a cruise ship with an X-bow:

Here are the ss France and ss Norway 2:

Thad, could I just say, i seriously like your design, the colours remind me off that awful QE2 colour scheme Cunard went to for a while (though they look better on your picture) however think in traditional Cunard colours she would be stunning.

Tom, I am wondering when we will see a cruise ship/ liner with an X bow.

I do like the grey paint job. The disney ships were already quite beautiful for a modern passenger ship, but I like your design even better, though she could be a bit longer

I have designs I'd like to share but they are in my head, unfortunately ... I don't have the skills to put them into pixels.

One of them is a design for a retro cruise ship - sort of a bigger DEUTSCHLAND but with an exterior to match the interiors. (The interior layout is based on her but it's got a two-deck main dining room as well as that wonderful two-deck ballroom.) The exterior looks a little like a modernized KUNGSHOLM of 1953, if you can imagine that. This I thought up on the observation that we have lots of ships with retro interiors but very few that are that way on the outside.

As for your design, I quite like it. But will she fit in Hamilton?

WOW. That is very impressive. IMO she needs a longer foredeck though.

Ah, but she is supposed to be a Furness-Bermuda Line ship and that is the color they are supposed to be.

I like the Disney Magic shortened, however the funnel does not work in its location or style. Twin uptakes further aft would make the design a winner

As a Furness fan, seeing the red Furness funnel on a modern hull is very thought-provoking. It's sort of like looking at one of the latest versions of a BMW Mini and saying "if only Morris could have taken it to there...".

My only thought, like other, is that the ship looks a bit "chubby". Would a slightly slimmer funnel help?

David, I'm sorry but your funnel doesn't work at all for me. It looks like what P.& O. did to the KUNGSHOLM. I think Thad's traditional funnel has more appeal if he's going for a classic, retro look.

I always thought this was a good updating of a traditional style liner. It was surprising she sailed for such a short period after the re-building but I recall new maritime standards forced her retirement.

I also never understood the white anchors.

The cruise ship images with the X bow remind me of the Southern Cross / Calypso / Azure Seas / OceanBreeze.

Well, other ships will know to steer away from it

Actually on the modern ships with the tall superstructures, the funnels have to be smaller or they act like a sail. When looking at the Disney ships, the funnels are a lattice work so the air goes through.

I think a Disney Magic with a couple of Michaelangelo funnels (leaning slightly back) would look great and because of their leanness would make her look longer.
