Yesterday QM2 was in Zeebrugge (first belgian visit, 5 years after first dutch one..)

There was yesterday in various places here heavy wind (and rain etc, summerstorm).

It was reported that QM2 broke her moorings : the cables at the bow snapped, and QM2 drifted in the harbour, but was helped by tugs.

See here the article in De Standaard.

According to the Radio News (VRT) this morning, QM2 left two hours late for Rotterdam, and there was damage both to the harbour installations, as to the ship.

does anybody know how much ?

J

They have been to Bruge before and encouraged me to go. The trip we took was my first time and was impressed.

Johan,

I visited QM2 today in Rotterdam, and we were told the ship has some damage at the rear, under the waterline.

We did something very similar in Cherbourg in QE2 in the autumn of 1974. In that case she was delayed while a hole in her outer skin was welded over. One poor crew member on one of the tugs, however, lost a leg in the incident. Due to the delays caused by repairs Cunard opened the bars at 6 pm every day and you couldn't get near them.

Looking at the weather reports for 1974, they had to say about QE2 when she tried to sail late from Cherbourg: "She was forced across the basin by gales, while leaving her berth at Cherbourg, France, at 2300 on the 27th. She struck the opposite pier and sustained a 10-m-long tear, 5m above the water. Two longshoremen were injured. The winds were reported to have been 55 kt."

Someone on board said one of the tug crew had lost a leg but reading this it may have been one of the linesmen. Even though QE2 was delayed for three days, I have never seen this incident mentioned other than in the press of the time.

Here are 3 pictures of the dammage. Before, the reapairs and after repair.

A diver was in the water for about 1 hour to check the ship underwater.

From pictures seen in the past I had the idea she was very pompous, but in real I liked the interior better than I thought.
The lunch we were offered was very good.

I hope to get my photos on-line a.s.a.p.

It seems Cunard's Queens have trouble keeping their rumps from crashing into piers. Not very lady like if you ask me.

I find it interesting in these photos just how much her stern is really designed like any box boat with the rouded section just weled on to improve her looks. This is in no way a negative comment about the ship it just is highlighted in a way I had never seen
