According to various Swedish newspapers, a serious fire has just broken out aboard Pullmantur's ZENITH while berthed in Stockholm.

Media reports invariably refer to the vessel as a passenger ferry, but ZENITH is no doubt the ship in question (see below). There is little detailed information available at present, except that people have been spotted jumping into the waters of the harbour, and that two people are suffering from smoke inhalation.

Up front I don't read Swedish but from the pics there is no evidence of smoke or damage - a couple of fire engines only, so probably a small fire already put out ? Hope I am not wrong.

People jumping into the harbour seems a bit OTT given they could have gone down the gangway.

From Cruise Business :

"UPDATE: Fire breaks out on Zenith in Stockholm PDF | Print | E-mail
Written by Kari Reinikainen
Tuesday, 18 August 2009 13:39
At 1600 local time, the fire had been put out by the ship's company and the Stockholm fire brigade. However, the build up of smoke had not ended as yet, the Swedish broadcasting company SVT reports on its website.

--A fire has broken out on board Pullmantur Cruises' Zenith while the ship was berthed in Stockholm, the Aftonbladet daily reports on its website. Two people have been taken to hospital after smoke inhalation. The emegency services received a call about the fire at 14.37 local time and it is estimated that there are some 600 people on board the vessel that can accommodate 1,600 passengers, the report said. Pullmantur is a fully owned subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd and its headquarters are located in Madrid in Spain."

At least no one is seriously hurt.

We will have to see what damage has been done and whether she will need major repairs, obviously this will not help Pullmantur's results and RCI's. Of course they can always substitute Atlantic Star if needs be - she hasn't caught fire in a siginificant way, yet.................................sic - sorry. But she is available so cruises could continue if Zenith is out of action.

According to thr 2nd of the above reports, everthing was finished just after 17:00 and the pax were allowed back on. The 2 suffering smoke inalation seem to have been the 2 welders that caused the fire in a 'tight space' & tried to put it out themselves [well that's what Google trans makes of it]. At least it does not appear to be major, and no serious injuries.

Hopefully this is the 3rd and final mishap for Zenith.

She departed Stockholm just after 05:00 [LT] this morning instead of 18:00 last night. Now on her way direct to St Petersburg, skipping the Tallinn call.

I am abaoard Prinsendam and was in Tallin with Zenith. She was not in St Petersburgh with us.

Perhaps they chose to stay in Tallin for further repairs?

There was no evidence of the fire externally.

I think that was last week Mike, 11th? She was in Tallinn then, after having come from St Petersburg. The fire was only yesterday in Stockholm and she left there this morning.

Ah yes Pam. Forgive me for losing track of the dates!

We were in Stockholm the day before Zenith and scheduled to be in Visby yesterday (18th). Unfortunately high winds kept us from tendering.

Instead the Rotterdam, Ocean Majesty and Prinsendam escorted each other round the south of Sweden.

Any word on where the fire was and how bad it was? I did read that she did depart in this posting.
