This is my first post, so be kind to me

Just back from my 9th cruise this was Oceana to the Fjords. We cruised in a Force10 through the North sea homewards on Friday 4th Sept, on the edge of Hurricane Danny. On Friday morning as we rock and rolled, we lost one of our satellite domes from the top deck, a fragment blew into the swimming pool, the rest on top deck and out to sea.
We had no communications from Friday am until we docked 2 hours late on Saturday.

I took some photos, here is the link:

I don't think the damage was repaired on the short turnaround of 7 hours, as I heard she was seen with a cover over the satellite, if anyone knows differently , let me know please. I hope they at least removed the dome from the pool, as the ship is now in the Med, and passengers will be annoyed to loose one of the pools as well as the internet and mobile phone coverage.

Libra.

Thanks for sharing your story and your interesting photos! And now we all know what the inner workings of those domes look like.

That's rather disappointing. I've always envisioned some kind of fancy high tech equipment in there. Now I know it's just a satellite dish that looks older than the ones people have on their houses.

Me too - I expected a whole pile of weird & wonderful electronic gadgetry, flashing lights & so on packed into the ball Instead just an ordinary dish with a cover making something small, huge. Thanks for the pics.

The dome just protects the dish from the elements. To be honest I already knew what was under it.

I would be more worried about radiation from the radars and whip aerials than those domes.

Here are a few photos of the storm from our balcony, not very dramatic really, as we weren't ofcourse allowed out on deck... feel free to browse the album with photos from the Fjords and of the ship.
