hi there

well this ain't that easy to answer
i've got a private list with some 235 active ships
sailing, but for example it does include Hurtigruten
and only ships bigger than 10K, i also included
some casino ships sailing from HongKong

furthermore some ships are laid-up in the winter season (Greece), so the exact number is flexible

regards
Joe

I think it depends on how you define "cruise ship". CLIA member cruise lines have about 207 cruise ships.

That list does not include some of the newer ships and not all cruise lines are members of CLIA however so the actual number of ships offering cruises is certainly greater.

What determines a cruise ship?

Bill Mayes recently published 3rd edition of Cruise Ships, covers "almost 700 ships from 250 operators" with the criteria "A few very interesting ships with a passenger capacity of fewer than 30 have been included this time, but in general the entry criteria remains at that level."

Yes look at this list of smaller, very interesting ships. Would you call all of them "cruise ships"

This list at least includes the fleet of Cruise West where the CLIA list did not. Their ships cruise regularly in Alaskan and mainland US coastal waterways and rivers.

hmm well I think American Canadian Caribbean Line is a cruise like and has two ships that sail to Canada and the Caribbean as well as coastal and inland waterways.

Interesting to note that the CLIA lists over 200 cruise ships in active service with over 35 being delivered this year. Most of these ships are heard toward the American market yet not one was ever built in this country. Most of the cruise lines are incorporated in this country yet employ very few American citizens. Imagine the boom to this economy if every ship was built in an American shipyard by American workers?
Can you imagine the number of workers they would employ vs the number of Americans on SNAP and other government assistance programs. The numbers would be staggering.
We have only to thank our labor unions, government regulators, and environmental groups for driving the maritime business overseas. This is not a political endorsement for any one candidate or political party.
It's just my observation as to the state of the maritime industry and others as well in this country. Something should be done about it.
