Ambassadors International said it signed a definitive agreement to sell Queen of the West to Blue Spruce LLC, an affiliate of American Cruise Lines.

The 142-passenger Queen of the West most recently operated seven-night cruises on the Columbia and Snake rivers round-trip from Portland, Ore. The vessel features 71 staterooms, four decks, a dining room, a show room, a lounge and a bar and grill.

With this sale, Ambassadors continues to execute the plan announced in February to focus all capital and efforts on Windstar Cruises and the small ship luxury segment.

Ambassadors has also completed sales of the housing portion of its Travel and Events division and its Marine Group earlier this year and recently entered into a definitive agreement to dispose of Ambassadors’ Cypress Reinsurance business

Sounds like and interesting move for American Cruise Lines. I wonder if she will be operated as part of their fleet or under a seperate division like Pearl Seas Cruises. Hopefully they will not overextend themselves with this purchase and the 2 newbuildings and go under like American Classic Voyages.

A bit of an update on the sale of the ship:

Queen of the West, which is being acquired by American Cruise Lines from Ambassadors International, may sail the Columbia River, its prior cruising ground, or possibly the Mississippi River, ACL chairman and ceo Charles Robertson told Seatrade Insider.

‘We have been looking at a West Coast operation for some time and since the demise of the Delta Queen Steamboat Co., we have also been looking at the Mississippi River,’ he said. ACL currently operates on the East Coast.

The paddlewheeler will likely sail under the ACL banner, but that is not completely firm, Robertson added. Depending on a number of factors, chiefly deployment, an office could be established on the West Coast, or in New Orleans or St. Louis.

Delivery to the new owner is scheduled by Nov. 20, but likely will come sooner. Queen of the West will probably re-enter service in mid-2010, Robertson said.

The vessel has been laid up in Portland, Ore., since operations ended for Ambassador’s Majestic America Line brand. Queen of the West is now being prepared for sea trials, to take place in the next two weeks.

Robertson told Seatrade Insider detailed plans are expected to be announced in mid-October.

The transaction price was not disclosed.

It might be a good move for them to transfer the ship over to the Mississippi as they would not have any competition on Midwestern Rivers at the moment with the demise of Majestic America and the river barge operation last year. It should be interesting to see what develops and what sort of routes they come up with.

I am sorry but the only company that is operating on the western rivers is the oldest US flagged cruise line American Canadian Caribbean Line and the M/v Niagara Prince. They operate many trips including a 14 day Chicago-New Orleans trip. Their wepsite is accl-smallships.com

Hey, only recently I saw Grande Mariner at Woods Hole.
I was not really in the ideal location for taking pictures but since I coincidentally had a camera with me when I saw her while waiting for my dinner I just started to film.

Yea she is a good old girl good sea boat been in some decent seas with her in the gulf and on the lakes she holds her own very well same with her fleetmates, but the Niagara Prince is the best sea boat in the fleet since she is built lower.
