As a single traveller (or even going dbl occupancy) I would personally never consider booking one of the Studio cabins. The whole thing reminds me of something I saw in a movie once of Amsterdam and the ladies of the evening in the windows. The cabins smack of voyeurism. Maybe I'm a prude, but No thanks.

When I booked myself on EPIC's transatlantic sailing, (at minimum possible rates) I was given the option of a Studio, or upgrade to a standard inside. I chose the latter, for a bit more space, a bit more privacy, and choicer location.

Looking at EPIC's deck plans, these studios are located on a private, center-line corridor, with seemingly very few access points in or out. I just would not want to be "buried" within so many layers of cabins, if possible.

The Studio cabins are designed for the younger generation (incl the Living Room design). It is an effort by NCL to get young cruisers to go on the Epic as most do not care where and how they sleep or how tight the quarters are.

I do know of a bunch of college students who think these cabins are 'kewl'.

Looking closely at all of the paln views of the staterooms on the Epic web site: Many of the cabin grades look quite small in terms of floor space with the exception of the top couple of grades.

I would say that the College crowd is just a part of their target market. I would guess that they are shooting for the younger crowd that would normally vacation in Cancun or south beach, miami and places like that. They want the chic, trendy person that would not do a Carnival cruise, but want to try cruising out.

I would say that the target market for Studios are partly college students. I see it as they are going after the young, chic, trendy, vacationer that would go to Cancun or South Beach, Miami. They are the kind that would not be interested in an affordable Carnival cruise and want an alternative to that kind of cruising.

Here is what I initially wrote

Since Olaf is a college student he is probably part of the younger generation thus a target for NCL and the studios. I never implied that NCL is solely targeting college students.

As a college student I have to say that I would never sail in one of these cabins. Like the second poster said they look like a brothel.

Agreed, Greg. Though, as a college student myself (too), I would take a larger inside.

The point is that the Studio cabins are an option if you want to take it. You can have a standard inside for the same fare and a whole other range of cabins at increasing fares.

Even if they were heavily discounted I would still pay more for a proper inside cabin or oceanview, with a real view, not a view of the hallway.

As a college student I like the concept of the "studio" staterooms, this will basically be sleeping quarters and are supposed to be affordable. The thing is, to be able to cruise by yourself or with a group of friends there is a minimum age requirement on all cruise lines which I believe is 25 (will have to double check the age policy), in other words one person in a stateroom must be 25. Most of the people who will end up using these staterooms will be families on a budget. Anyway, I think this is a very cool concept, just that prices are pretty high, from what I've seen $699+ for dates students can actually take a weeklong cruise.

On a side note, I don't know if this exists or not but cruise lines who do world voyages (Cunard, etc.) should set up a program that would works with colleges for study abroad programs, not like that Celebrity program of the scholar ship. This semester we are having a study abroad program in the school of architecture at Genoa (I didn't go) which costs a bit over $15,000 for about three months where a 103 night voyage on QM2 is around $20,000 and we go around the world not just Genoa or Florence.

I am very much for reduced fares for students but I am afraid a cruise is by far too superficial to count as a course. This is not even remotely the same as studying at an institution aboard for an extended period of time - and I guess you exchange program is more about the courses and being in a different environment for a longer time and not a vacation. Beside that, there is a lot 'to do' in Florence.
