The sale of Pullmantur’s Atlantic Star (ex Sky Wonder) is expected to close in the fourth quarter, with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. taking a charge of 3 cents per share related to a write-down on the ship, cfo Brian Rice told analysts during today’s earnings call.

At one point the steamship -- built in 1984 as Fairsky -- had been earmarked for a new cruise product for Mexicans based from Acapulco. Instead, the renamed Atlantic Star was deployed from Lisbon in early April on cruises targeted at the Portuguese market. In late May it was replaced by a newer vessel.

At the time Pullmantur president and ceo Gonzalo Chico Barbier told Seatrade Insider Atlantic Star was being repositioned for a new South America program, to be announced.

As it turned out, the ship was laid up. ‘We had a buyer and thought it prudent to sell,’ Rice said today. The buyer and sale price were not disclosed.

I just have to wonder who would actually buy this ship since she has been so problematic over the years. It should be interesting who would take this ship on.

A bit of an update from Seatrade Insider:

Discussions with Pullmantur about the possible acquisition of Atlantic Star (ex Sky Wonder) are under way, Capt. Paris Katsoufis of Kyma Ship Management told Seatrade Insider. However, he said nothing has been decided.

If Katsoufis were to acquire the 1984-built steamship, he said he would re-engine it using machinery he already owns then charter the vessel to a European operator.

Katsoufis told Seatrade Insider charter arrangements must be firmed before he decides whether to move forward on an acquisition. ‘Nothing is final,’ he said.

I wonder if these are "Zoe's" (formerly "Regent Sky's") engines that had reportedly "vanished" some time ago.

Best,

Sounds interesting but RCI sounded a lot more definite about a sale so I wonder if there is more than one contender for the ship?
