ROYAL PRINCESS is to become P&O's ADONIA in May 2011 as a replacement for ARTEMIS.

Along with ARCADIA she will be an adult-only ship.

Thanks for the news.

If true, a disgusting concocted name, taken from "ADults ONly" plus an IA ending. They could have called her ARTEMIS short and simple.

P&O has previously operated an Adonia. This was the P&O name for Sea Princess during her sojourn with P&O.

It's Greek in origin, and means "extremely good looking" - as might be guessed from the more common masculine form: "Adonis".

As the last ADONIA was short-lived it seems odd they are to re-use the name.

So they say Globaliser, but I don't believe it, it's too "cute" - not good-looking at all. Interesting that supporters of the MINERVA II may be getting her back as a P&O ship though. Wonder how much the new P&O chief (and ex-Swan's chief) Carol Marlow had to do with this?

At least the P & O UK customers will have a small cruise ship which will no doubt please many passengers who do not like the blocks of flats on a pontoon !

Her furnishings are more like those of a comfortable country club rather than like a mass market entertainment complex at sea !

P&O will be the most variegated brand in the UK Neil, what with two original designs, one ex-Princess ship, one "Vista" once intended for Cunard, two "Grand" class newbuildings and one (for now anyway) "R" ship! The latter will be interesting to see in P&O colours!

If P&O make a go of it I could see another Princess boutique ship moving over to P&O before long. Perhaps they could trade the Oceania for the Ocean and Pacific Princesses?

PS: Thanks for the news Tony.

If the ships are languishing at Princess, and not getting the returns that they should, then Carnival should move them to Cunard as the "small" fleet. Paint them green, and call them Franconia and Carmania. Or revive the White Star Line as Carnival's "Premium" line, just "under" Cunard to go up against Oceania. Name the two remaining ships the Olympic and Majestic.

LOL Thad. Well looking at the marketing email I was sent earlier I despair - my main bug of these ships is that staircase. Lo and behold, the mirror, table and even the carpet have not been changed since my photos in 2003. The foliage to the sides has grown a bit though and the potted plant has been replaced with another Far too couped up for me.

She looks like this

I am truly surprised that Carnival is doing this. I have sailed on Royal Princess twice and like her very much indeed and I thought that Princess' strategy of running them as "Princess Lite" was rather clever. The ship seemed to have many fans and was busy and well-liked on both my trips.

Well, maybe this means the Royal Princess name will be used on the rumored newbuild from Meyer Werft. And perhaps the design is innovative and inspiring enough to be worthy of the "Royal" name.

Well, she is already up on the P&O Cruises webpage incase anyone was wondering what she will look like. I have to wonder why they chose to reuse the name Adonia rather then one of the more traditional names like Iberia, Himalaya, or even Caledonia considering this is supposed to be a "traditional" P&O ship.

She already has [or had] a half-model of SS Caledonia aboard in the Wheeler Bar, so appropriate.

Chusan would have been a good name for the new P & O ship as that has connections with the P & O company for many years.

The last ss Chusan, when she entered service in 1950, was the first large cruise ship to be fitted with stabilizer fins !

The first P & O passenger ship to visit Port Jackson, Australia in 1852 was also named Chusan !

She was also the first ship to offer a regular mail service between UK and Australia.

IBERIA, HIMALAYA, CHUSAN, CALEDONIA, these are all great names.

ADONIA is terrible. So is VENTURA.

Then again, I hated ARTEMIS too, even though I understood the reasoning behind it.

The R ships have always done well with Princess, one of the reasons Minerva II was moved there. I suppose their thinking is that they need another ship to replace Artemis so one these is ideal and will earn at least the same at P&O if not a bit more because P&O fares tend to be higher.

The other 2 will most definately stay at Princess, zero chance of a Cunard move. Although some of the old Cunard names are nice they will never be used again simply because Cunard has wholly embrassed the "Queen" concept and the cruising public would be very confused is they tried to change it.

I had often wondered if Carnival might use the 3 ships in its own version of Oceania but obviously they felt returns were better leaving them where they did.

To me it seems a brilliant transfer. P&O get a reasonable modern ship, small to mid size and even though allot of us may not approve of the name it suggests that they are sticking to their traditional market with this one.

Names like Azura and Ventura were never traditional P&O names and were named to appeal to the younger crowds like me.

I wonder if they will ever send this one into the heart of London considering it can actually make it up the Thames.

I personally think its a great move. The ships are attractive exterior wise and have a modern look.
