It's kind of a shame they have to remove the sculpture (I would consider it an awning, not a sculpture) as it provided a nice covering and modern appearance to the pier. We got to see it a few years ago on the Liberty of the Seas second call in San Juan.

RCCL has managed to make it to all her port of calls (Nassau TBD) and she wasn't supposed to be able to fit anywhere. Normally when your docking a ship at a new port for the first time it is standard procedure to check all of the port requirements, one of which is the max beam. Kind of makes you question Carnivals safety in general as knowing those distances are vital in safely docking. Maybe that is why they've hit so many RCCL ships in dock recently.
While I agree with the majority of what you said, the part that I made bold I would have to disagree with in the strongest terms, I would fully expect to read something like that in The Sun/ Daily Post, but not on here.
Is it a stupid thing to have happen, well of course it is, someone dropped the ball, but to call into question the safety of all Carnival owned ships because of this, NO.
The structure in SJ was designed by my architecture professor from last year, he also designed the Royal Caribbean terminals and the new Carnival terminals in Miami and a few others. It would really be a shame if they get rid of this.
As far as dock art goes it is one of the better ones and the shade it gives during the day must be most welcome.
I am wondering if it cannot be moved to another part, something like swung round 180 degrees or adjusted in some way ???

Oasis also has boats that hand over the side of the ship. I wonder if she would have the same problem?

Right now, St Thomas (sub base), Labadee and Nassau piers are clear of structures close to the pier edge. Same for the future Western Caribbean ports of Falmouth and Cozumel.
Should RCCI decide to bring the OOTS to San Juan (if it is logistically possible), at least Carnival would have paid for the sculpture to have been removed for them!
