HAL's Statendam will be the first of the 4 vessels to arrive. She is headed up the coast now, pilot boarding just after midnight, and is due at Ballentyne on Wednesday morning.
A couple of regular posters here report Mona Lisa due at the Panama Canal about now. Oosterdam and the Carnival ship ( ?? ) should be along soon. Anyone know the dates?

Statendam, Elation and Oosterdam are headed for Ballentyne. The Norwegian vessel is in North Vancouver near the sulpher pile. Mona Lisa is at the pulp mill wharf, not sure exactly where though.

At 4:15am EST/1:15am PST Statendam was about an hour west of of Port Angeles, WA with about 110nm still before reaching Vancouver. She was doing 14 knots. That should put her into Vancouver Harbor around 9:30am local?

Looks like heavy seas off Oregon and Washington cost her about 4 hours. Her dock assignment has changed too, now headed for Centerm rather than Ballentyne. There should be views on the harbour web cam close to 8am.

The first cruise ship coming to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics, the Statendam, has arrived. I saw her this morning around 9:30 AM, pulling in to Ballantyne Pier's east berth.

I was on SkyTrain, heading to work, when I noticed her docking bow first at Ballantyne, belching white smoke and looking splendid (fresh from a refit, I think). The Oosterdam and the Carnival Elation are next.

The Norwegian Star will arrive in Vancouver Harbour on February 10, the same day as the magnificent Russian tall ship, Kruzenshtern arrives to promote the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.

The Mona Lisa is not actually coming to Vancouver. She apparently is heading for Squamish, at the end of Howe Sound. She should arrive on January 26th.

It'll be quite the challenge to get any pictures of her, let alone any decent shots. But I'm sure gonna try.

Regards, Kaiser

Do you think there would be any chance of getting permission to go aboard? I wonder who would have to be approached?

Wishful thinking?

Graham.

If the ship is chartered, I would think you would inquire to the organization that chartered her. If she is being used as an Olympic venue for berthing security personnel or athletes, I would think the chances are 'zero' that they are permitting visitors, especially since this is the Olympic Games. I imagine security in and around her will be very tight.

But it never hurts to ask.

The Mona Lisa has arrived! She's a few days early and is anchored out in English Bay (in anchorage "5" I think...) and is expected to stay there until Tuesday, when she'll sail up Howe Sound for Squamish.

I went out to the waterfont near the Maritime Museum to get a shot of her and even though I brought my zoom lens, I coulda used a zoom lens for my zoom lens, she's that far out!

Anyhow, I saw her (she's lovely!), I photographed her (that speck on the photo is proof I saw her) and hopefully I'll get some better shots in the days to come ... maybe at her berth in Squamish, assuming I don't get arrested for trespassing!

Regards, Kaiser

Thanks for letting us know she has arrived. I'll try to get a photo tomorrow, but I may not have a good enough zoom.

I don't have a camera with me!

Question, I'm having a hard time seeing anything on the cam. How long does it take a photo to come up? All I'm getting is a white space, no photo. Thank you for your help.

From HALblog,

quote:
Statendam Crew Creates Huge Flag for Vancouver Olympics
Bert van Mackelenbergh is Statendam’s hotel manager | January 20th, 2010

Slowly but surely ms Statendam is getting more and more guests, or as they say, members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (short: RCMP) as well as members of the Canadian Forces (short: CF).

Also, more people are arriving in Vancouver every day to get ready for the Olympics.

While the athletes are getting ready to break world records, the Statendam team is getting ready to break another record — creating the biggest Canadian flag ever flown in Vancouver.

The flag, a project of the Statendam Olympic team, is now complete. For days, crew members put in countless hours and manpower to create the largest Canadian flag made in Vancouver. We really hope to break the record with this handmade piece of art that measures 35 feet by 24 feet (10.7 meters by 7.3 meters)!

Greetings Ben.

Here is a pic (I hope - or at least the link) of Mona Lisa in Vancouver - taken from Jericho Beach...perhaps West Vancouver would have been a better vantage point - but I am just happy to have seen her.

Yes, pretty well every class of Carnival's newbuilds have visited Vancouver, except the Fantasy Class... The one off Tropicale, Jubilee of the Holiday Class, the "Vista" Carnival Spirit and the Destiny derivitive Carnival Splendor.

Even though the Fantasy Class is dated, it'll be nice to see the Carnival Elation in Vancouver.

I had a good view of Mona Lisa as I drove out to Horseshoe Bay yesterday. I turned off at 22nd Street & stopped on a side road with a good view across the bay towards her. I tried taking a photo with my cellphone but the ship just looked like a speck of dirt on the lens! Fortunately I had my binoculars with me so I was able to see her well through those. She is indeed a bonnie wee boatie. She has such a graceful hull & stylish, sleek curves to her superstructure. I suppose that these are qualities that were appreciated in the ladies of the day too, unlike the emaciated 'stick insect' look that the models of today portray! It was a curvaceous sort of an era!

That was the highlight of the day. My car would not start when it was time to get on the ferry & I required a boost/jump start. When I made it on board, the Mona Lisa was just a white smudge in the misty distance.

I have heard that she has now been moved up to Squamish so I hope that the advanced party will be doing some reconnaissance soon!

Graham.
