I have seen some sporadic images of the ship after her SOE refit, but I haven't seen a profile pic, with that new stern deck.

Anyone see any photos? Is she ruined?

On HALblog there are some pictures of the refit. But not of the finished ship.
Prinsendam dry-dock.

There is a photo on a HAL site:

http://www.cleanpix.com/cleanpix/portal/W1387:K0H:bbk

Another awful addition, honestly a few external pieces of decorative steel would have made this flow more nicely. Also all the new verandahs look open to the deck above.

I had booked a Norwegian fjord cruise on Prinsendam for this coming July but jumped ship to Silver Cloud after learning about the changes to be made to her. No regrets here. Prinsendam RIP.

She was such a unique ship-one that was built w/very interesting details both fore and aft. The ONLY good thing about this mess is that there is no ducktail!

HAL is certainly on a roll beating their ships w/an ugly stick!

Nooo! She was HALs most beautiful ship! The addition looks horrible in that picture.

HAL is going through great lengths to look cheaper and cheaper.

Rather unfortunate I must say. Her stern, one quite lovely, now has an odd boxy look that just doesnt look quite right. Maybe it looks better in real life?

Well, I think this is slightly less bad than ROTTERDAM, herself slightly less bad than VEENDAM, but really, it seems HAL is intent on making all its ships as ugly as possible.

Unlike the other two ships, the changes here shouldn't adversely affect the on-board experience much, but it certainly wrecked the poor ship's looks.

This refit might actually be a good thing. There was not space at the aft pool (even after the refit done by Seabourn) and now there seems to be ample open deck space. I hope it still is a proper pool since the other pool is (and always was) a bad joke.

I withhold judgment until the final pictures are out ....

but I suspect this has impacted the ship's on board experience. In the name of finances more and more people are being packed aboard the ships. HAL has added more cabins yet again and taken away a lounge from the "as built" ship. Further they appear to now be creating an overhang over the dining room's aft windows.

That aft dining room was one of the best features aboard the ship with its large windows. Royal Viking made a significant decision to block the windows of the lounges with the lifeboats so they could have unobstructed balconies.

So now not only does the ship carry more people than she was designed for with less lounge space but they are further blocking the views of the sea and sunlight in the public spaces.

PS I just downloaded the picture from the HAL web site .... ugh! Final judgment is in .... she looks bad. The dining room is totally covered over the new cabins look like a cheep addition.

I had the pleasure of sailing on her several times when she was new ....

It certainly did not improve her exterior appearance and it's true that the aft section of the dining room has a disadvantage from the refit. However, the rather low ceiling of the otherwise forgetable dining room is the reason why the windows in the aft were only an advantage for those sitting right next to them - and why this will affect the rest of the dining room only indirectly (a bit less light during daytime).
The additional cabins of course increase her capacity but I doubt that this will be much of a problem although the indeed squeezed a lot of cabins in there.
What I am more concerned about is the astern pool. As said above, I sincerely hope that it still is a proper pool (with sufficient depth to swim) - anything else would be really, really bad. If it's still a usable pool (!) the advantages of this refit would outweigh the disadvantages.

793 passengers on a 38.000 grt vessel I cannot believe that the slightly more passengers will have a big impact on the available space.

As built the Royal Viking Sun had 370 staterooms and a passenger capacity of 740 on 38,000 GT

HAL now says the Prinsendam has 419 staterooms and a capacity of 835 with the GT of 37,983.

I could not find the staffing numbers to make that comparison and clearly the GT is off since they had added structure and not removed square footage.

Using the 38,000 that shows her space ratio (GT to pax) has come down from 51.3 to 45.5. Clearly the ship is not on the same standard as when she was built, which is the bad news ....

but the good news is she still has the best space ratio of the fleet. Generally HAL has a space ratio of the low 40s -- with the new Nieuw Amsterdam looking to be about the lowest at 41 on her space ratio.

I agree the dining room did not have the best views from its center but it was a very bright space with a lot of natural light which must be lost with the overhangs now and since the room has not been expanded I assume they have had to find ways to put in additional chairs/tables to accommodate the extra passengers. That would be a shame as well because as built the room was fairly spacious with a high number of tables for two and small tables.

As I said clearly HAL is not RVL and the RV Sun was not to the standard of the original Royal Viking trio.

You are right, SS TRAVELER, RV Sun was never up to the standard of the original three RV sisters. Royal Viking Line was never up to the standards of SAL and NAL either. I was never a fan of RV Sun nor Prinsendam, but she is very popular with HAL regulars.

37,983 GT is her tonnage before this refit.

Unfortunately LR does not list her tonnage.

Quiet a few interesting comments and observations from a passenger currently on Prinsendam including this:

Yes there is no question, the new extended aft deck is a big asset to the Prinsendam and really does enhance the look and feel of the ship. Even the area below this deck where the newly installed cabins are housed has not diminished in any way, in my opinion, the classical look of the ship.

Lots of nice pictures too.

Absolutely. Royal Viking Sun was a 'near miss' - she could have been a fantastic ship but she had quite some problems and was far from being adequate for her (price) category. However, I believe that (after the modifications) she is a good fit for HAL and that some of her problems might have been resolved.

One comment I found intersting in Capt. Albert's blog was this:

Today no post. This is going to be a 24 hour day of cleaning up and undocking during the night time. The overtime budget for the ship is going to take a major hit today.

I still find it hard to believe that a company would find it acceptable to leave the shipyard with such a huge project such as the aft pool deck yet to be completed. It was finished on the 6th day after leaving. Why couldnt this have been done before paying passengers came aboard?

The RV Sun was more of a miss because NCL was already mucking around at RVL. Service aboard was still good and generally she was fun. I joined her starting with the first eastbound crossing and my last trip with her was a westbound crossing over the top of the world into Canada. Six weeks later I was aboard Crystal.

The cabins on the RV Sun were great but a lot of the repeaters hated that she had no singles. Also the blocked view from the lounge deck was a big drawback. Lots of little design flaws as well plus I remember at least two complete blackouts while we were aboard when she was still fairly new.

I think it is funny that the pics on the last link page are all the old ones and the photo of Lauderdale is ancient because the Ocean Breeze is on the dock.

As for the Prinsendam not being finished HAL made the decision because I guess they sandwiched in the dry docking. They said at the beginning she would be finished while in service. I seem to recall the cabins they added do not go on sale until the spring.

They got to be stretching the staff a lot thinner on the ship. The crew and staff accommodations were always tight. RVL added the staff on the stern below the dining room because of issues even then and I am sort of surprised HAL has not claimed some of that space for paying passengers .... but it would make the ship even tighter. I guess with the smaller dining room they reduced staff needs a little but those new cabins need crew .... unless they are starting a new concept "take care of your own cabin." They also stole officer space for the Neptune Lounge up top.
