PICS DELETED AT REQUEST OF SOME PEOPLE WHO DID NOT LIKE THE FACT THAT I SHOWED THEM WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH SOME PHOTOS.
I just wanted to learn other people what a little cutting and saturation could do but some people are just singleminded.

I would think that your remarks about the quality of pictures posted will discourage people from posting on here.
Not everybody has the time to sit around making changes to pictures they have taken or is an expert photographer.
Most cruising website forums, including mine, are grateful for any pictures posted.
Should we get a poor picture I will always download it and re-post it, having tried to improve it for the poster.
Those sort of comments loose you forum members.

Just as Saturday, it was cold rainy and foggy as you cane see in my last pictures. Thanks a lot for your efforts. The question is of course: What is real? I know many people who consider post processing as inappropriate manipulation. I think they forget that taking the picture itself is already manipulative. When you look trough the viewfinder you make a decision on what's in the picture and what's not in the picture. I would even go that far to say that it's sometimes necessary to do some post processing since the plain picture might not get the message across how the 'real situation' was - which is of course per definition subjective.

I think the attempts to get what ship enthusiasts consider 'the perfect shot' is often the reason why these photos are boring. The foreground and the surrounding area can be included and often it's these things which make an interesting picture.

Your pictures are fine and highly appreciated.

Jochen
P.S. : photographers among us , what do you think about the photo itself ?
quote:Originally posted by Cunardcoll:And I expected 3 ships in Zeebrugge and got only one , but then again , this ONE was worth the trip , she 's my favourite QM2 , I also got a nice shot of P&O Pride of York wich I sailed a few weeks ago.JochenP.S. : photographers among us , what do you think about the photo itself ?
What have Zeebrugge to do with the Rotterdam calls. Maybe nice to open you're own topic about the Zeebrugge calls.
Ben.
in the first place thanks a lot for your picsthey are highly appreciated and i know like you dothat sometimes getting there is the hardest part
nevertheless i understand the words from Jochen, although they seem a little harsh to methey are good shots of ships, i would sayno art involved, but hey we are here onshiploving forum aren't we?
ofcourse we all make effort to make a good shotsharpness, perspective, flat horizon i do not thinkor pretend that we are making art(at least i'm not)
i'm one of the purists that doesn't like photoshopped pics, however i do understand the fun and quality of it when properly done, for me the shot(as best as i can) at that time is my view andregistration of the ship involved
keep on going, most of us appreciate it!
best regards,b. Joe

Absolutely. Sometimes there is more effort involved in getting a nice picture than one would think.

Sharpness, level horizon etc. are not necessarily features I would use to define art but good craftsmanship. Maybe 'here' in this forum we are happy with some not so nice pictures since we are more interested in the ship but I think it's always necessary to make an effort to take a good picture (not necessarily art) - and this is not only about features like sharpness but also (and probably even more) about the composition.

I used to think like that and I would still agree that as little post processing as possible (preferably none) is better. Taking a good picture first place is of course always preferable - even if one has to do some post processing. However, I am not entirely against some 'photoshopping' (if appropriate) since taking the picture itself is already manipulative.
If you don't look at those things then you better buy a camera of 120 EURO and you get the same results , but most people here have a bigger more expensive camera or even a digital SLR like me , why would you buy a big expensive camera if you don't know how to use it and you don't try to learn it.
at least try to get the light and composition right and keep it as still as possible and the photo will be a lot better.
About photoshop I say just this , use it for retouching like I do but creating a different photo is another thing , most people (including myself) don't even know how to start creating a new photo from more other photos (well I know a bit about it , mixed lightings , pasting another sky behind something , but I never do it in a shipphoto)
At least try to impress us , like here
topicNow THAT is great craftsmanship in photography.
Again Patrik27 , very good
