OK, I'm reaching out to my CT friends. For those out there who watch television and happen to watch some reality shows...not necessarily like Survivor or The Apprentice where there are eliminations each week, but a show where there is something interesting and unique happening each week. If a producer came to you and asked you to come up with a cruise-related reality show for television, what ideas would you come up with?

i know this isnt exactly answering your question, but there was a brilliant series back in 1998 aboard celebrity's then brand new ship Galaxy, it was ingeniously called "the cruise" brilliant thinking i know..

it followed around 6 crew members for a full contract, but mainly focused on the fabulous jane MacDonald, who was a struggling singer from yorkshire England. She bacame so popular she has sell out concerts all over the UK still, and is now a regular panel member on the uk version of the View, sadly called Loose Women. Its a briliant day time show on youtube.. love it..

they did a reunion show last year, again wittingly called "return to the cruise" some of that is on youtube and worth checking out... Both great series that chronicled ship board life very well...

they should maybe do a faking it type thing where they get a repsected captain from an upmarket fleet and plonk him onboard a not so upmarket ship as an entertainment cruise director, or do the same with a container captain, give him 2 weeks to perfect his skills for 4 day getaway type sailing n se how many passengers clock on?!!!! might be rubbish, might not.. lol

There were or are several 'Reality TV Shows' on German TV. I am sure some of the German members can provide you with information on that.

Follow the cruise director, engineering / bridge officers and keep them cameras out of the regular crews faces and living quarters, they don't need the hassle and sure as heck the lines wouldn't want the public seeing the stuff that goes on there and the hours they work.

Swop staff members from a Seabourne yacht and a Carnival Cruise ship. Waiter to waiter, Captain etc.

Or a "typical" Grill class pax (UK and snooty) from QM2 with a "typical" party Carnival pax.

Other than that probably been done.

Even National Geographic has its cruise programme from Costa Serena.

What do you expect to happen? I am sure you know that professionals perspective on the brands you mentioned is a very different one than e.g. passengers might have. I know many crew members who worked aboard luxurious ships and also mainstream ships - especially crew members in higher ranks (since you mentioned 'captain').

Yes, there are actually a lot of documentaries on cruise ships and some of them would pass as 'Reality TV'. 'Just' following a crew member for a day would not be too original - this has been done.

Can anybody list some of the past shows on TV that were specifically "cruise" related?

I can think of several:
Love Boat
Shipmates
The new Love Boat
The Cruise
Return to the Cruise

I think "Reality Shows" have peaked and are on their way out, so I'm trying to come up with some ideas that are fresh and new. Sitcoms are done, the latest trends are moving in the direction of dramas for television but with a high-tech twist. What type of show, involving the cruise industry, would be (A) entertaining (B) hasn't been done before (C) Is fresh and informative (D) would be fun to watch and have a long shelf-life for multiple seasons

"The Gale Storm Show" 1956-1960, starring Gale Storm (My Little Margie) as the Cruise Director on a round-the-world cruise ship. Every week various crew and staff members had their usual hi-jinks. Filmed in a studio, with exterior shots usually of PRESIDENT CLEVELAND or PRESIDENT WILSON.

I'm afraid I can't remember the name but there was one filmed aboard Island Escape when Island Cruises was set up, and during the rather disastrous early operations.

I believe there is also one right now on Sky Travel aboard a Costa ship (one of the Conquest class ones) circuiting the Western Med.

I'd be interested to know more about the Costa TV show, or whatever it is about.

It would be interesting to have a show that showed both shipboard and shoreside operations. It would be neat to see behind the scenes on the ships and at the cruise line offices. It would also be neat if it covered the whole industry and not just one cruise line, for example if you had episodes on RCI and others on Carnival or NCL.
