It seems that the project has reached a new level thanks to STX Saint Nazaire :

Still puzzled by the design though :

I like it. It's a very interesting interpretation of the original FRANCE funnels.

I assume the "funnels" are actually accommodation towers, with the forward tower encompassing the Bridge (as the funnel wings) and the aft tower a likely observation lounge (again as the funnel wings).

I would love something like this to actually get built.

I have really mixed feelings about this.

It is (to me) aesthetically pleasing, and it's a very interesting design concept for a ship. But it's somehow ruined for me by claiming to be a new FRANCE. I like the design but dislike its whole raison d'être, which is a somewhat difficult position. I like the design, and I also like the idea of a new FRANCE, I just don't like the design as a new FRANCE. I almost feel as though the design is cheapened by being presented as an echo of something from the past rather than allowed to stand on its own as something new and radically different.

Exactly, I would love for there to be some competition for the QM2, something along the lines of the QE2/France situation.

However, this really is a bad pie in the sky dream.

I'm sure there's an alternate universe where CMA-CGM woke up, noticed Cunard's success playing up their "liner heritage" to attract Norway passengers after Norway's withdrawal and, realizing demand for the "real thing," spun out and relaunced CGT and the France.

Oh, one can dream.

It's plain ugly.

I'm not too worried though, because I'm 100% confident it will never be built.

If a "new France" were actually built in real life, she'd most likely resemble QM2 except with that "Normandie" clipper bow and two winged funnels.

I like it... In someways the concept reminds me of the original Phoenix project with the open decks and large "hotel" towers. I cannot really get a good idea of how large it is, as the images of the ship in Venice make it look somewhat small, but the "tower stacks" look to be pretty tall. I do find this view somewhat evocative though..

The ship is relatively small, compared to most of today's newbuilds: some 800 feet long, 550 passengers. You can see only 4 decks in the hull, with about 6 decks in each tower, but those have a relatively small area of space.

The website says she is 260 meters (853 feet) in length or the same as a Carnival Fantasy-Class ship

I like the design as long as this kind of thing doesn't become to mainstream.

I kind of like it but also agree with jetwet1 , I would like to see a competition between QM2 and a new France/Normandie again , maybe even a new sister for QM2 called Mauretania or Aquitania again.

Who needs lifeboats ??

I thinks they are probably going to be inboard one of those 3 "open" decks you see in the pics.

The hull design is interesting, but I don't like the funnels. They are way oversized. Yes, Normandie's funnels were once thought to be too large as well, but this ship lacks the aesthetics of the Normandie to make up for it.
