Despite all the moaning about Epic's looks, compare it to Oasis of the Seas and decide which is more attractive. It's a toss up for me... maybe even a slight nod toward Epic

Epic looks much better. Oasis has too much on her so she looks bloated. Taking away the forward sqare and the aft shes not that bad looking. Well compared to Oasis anyways.

I think by painting the top of the "crown" part navy blue REALLY helps. It kind of disguises the actual profile thats underneath. If it were all white then if would stand out boldly.
Anyone else agree?

The dark paint and tinted glass was designed to minimize the bulk of the upper-decks. The designers did not want to call attention to that box so they tried their best to make it 'disappear' even adding a stepped paint effect on the sides. That side angled paint design compliments the angle of the lower bridgefront and additionally helps to reduce the bulk up top.

It looks like they were trying to erase the forward half of the penthouse section and to some extent it worked.

Neither of these will ever be graceful beauties but they are built for a different purpose

Epic remains quite ugly though maybe not as bad as expected.

Oasis is ok in side profile but her breadth makes her look bloated when viewed from bow or stern or in 3/4 profile.

EPIC's stern view is definitely her better side, in my opinion. Sorry, but that penthouse block stuck atop her bridge just looks like such an afterthought--too bad they couldn't integrate it into the vessel amidships, as was done on all the Star and Dawn-Class ships.

All modern mega-ships look ugly close up however many still look sleek for a distance. Oasis does, Epic doesn't!

There is no doubt that Norwegian Epic isn't a beautiful looking ship but I do not see how Oasis of the Seas looks 'sleek' from the distance. She is pretty wide and it doesn't help much to see her from far away when looking at her front or back.

Somehow I think the lower baby blue colored hull of OASIS takes away from the whole package. If she had been painted all white I think she would have been more attractive but the blue to me just looks 'dirty'. Maybe it looks better in person?

Um, they are both pretty ugly. But the Epic is the more hideous looking of the two.

It depends on the angle one views them. From astern IMHO Oasis looks as though she needs to go on a diet - the belt has been done up too tight and she's bulging over the top

Personally, I don't think that painting a butterfly on the stern of Oasis would make any difference.

Oasis of the Seas has three 'Azipods' (from ABB).

ABB webpage (via tinyurl).

What's new is that three pods can be rotated. In the case of QM2 two of the four pods can not be rotated and in the case of the Voyager/Freedom class one of the three pods can not be rotated.

I don't think either OASIS or EPIC will win first prize in exterior looks, but overall OASIS has the more cohesive design. OASIS looks like she was designed with a purpose and that there was some consideration given to exterior aesthetics. There is also a strong resemblance to existing RCI ships. She is very wide, but overall looks decent for being the largest passenger ship in the world. She could certainly be a lot worse.

EPIC on the other hand seems like the designers just plucked things here and there without overall consideration to the exterior aesthetics. I really don't see a cohesive design but a lot of different design traits thrown together. "Ungainly" is a word that comes to mind when I look at EPIC. This being said I don't find her ugly, just interesting. There is so much going on that I find myself really analyzing the recent exterior photos of her. There is little uniformity and EPIC is one ship where you really need to pay attention to your cabin selection. The balcony may have an overhang above providing complete shade, or nothing above being completely exposed to the elements. You may also have a "hull hole" balcony or something more open. These nuisances don't exist with OASIS. There is much more uniformity.

I also find it interesting that no one is taking credit for the design of EPIC. You hear nothing about it. Perhaps no one wants to own up to it? It might be a career killer.

Ernie

Ernie, the OASIS looks like it was designed by a team with a strong leader and all worked together from the beginning. There was a cohesive unit putting it together from a lot of demands and conditions.

The Epic looks like 10 people had a hand in it all at different times and all got their way, horse traded, back stabbed with much infighting if they didn't get their way. The project leader here was weak, put everyone against each other, or there was no leader.
